Non run flat tyres wearing more in the middle.

Post by martin33100 » Wed Dec 28, 2016 11:11 pm

Hi guys, about 3 years ago I went to non run flats (275 and 315 20's) and after some research I chose the newly out Mich Latitude Sport 3's.
Also had a little bit of toe taken from the front alignment and had some camber taken from the rear, so far I have done 20k on the tyres but the rears seem to be wearing in the middle, 2mm left but with 4mm on the outer edges.
Always have kept the rears at the recommended 2bar for light loads, just wondered if anyone else has had similar experiences running standard tyres etc.

That is most likely pressure related, but 2Bar shouldn't be enough to do that!!

Can you test / check the contact patch and work from there!!??
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

How would I check the contact patch?

2mm inballance is a lot better than you would get from Runflats I guess, I change mine at 3 mm as I find they are rubbish in the wet, especially standing water at less than 3 mm
Have you found the ride quality and road holding better on the non Runflats.?

[/quote]The ride is much better now, our X5 has 20's and the sport suspension so the ride was quite rough before I changed them.
Also we have the 5 seater so I bought the space saver and jack kit from BMW, the Mich latitude sport 3's are great tyres and factory spec on some of the new Porsche Macan's/ Volvo XC90's etc.

One way is to drive through a small puddle of water and then onto dry concrete or paper..
the impression may give you some indications of loading
You may even be able to get some pressure sensitive stuff for it?

there are also devices that can check it for you but not sure who or where!!??

Thanks for the advice, I may have a look but in all honesty they have now done just over 20k and still have some rubber left so that it's bad for an X5 on 20's.

Hi,

20K out of them is really really good. Most X5's, by the time the 315 rears have wear in the middle, the inner edge is down to the canvas as they have so much neg camber.
If your tyres are evenly worn on both edges then you have the rear geometry at zero I guess, neither positive nor negative camber. That being the case then , a tyre that has more wear in the middle is said to be over-inflated and a tyre that has more wear on the edges than the middle is said to be under -inflated. Adjust and eek out a few more miles out of them.

Regards,
Nat.
