Annoying squeak when turning steering wheel

Post by Straycat_67 » Mon May 01, 2017 12:54 pm

Hi guys,

* (2011 X5)

Have any of you had the issue with a slight mouse type squeak when turning the steering wheel left or right, seems to be worse under cold weather, disappears in the warmer months.

Last year (March) BMW solved the issue, so it seemed, with some lube under the bonnet somewhere (never really explained). It came back again beginning this year, X5 sill under an AUC warranty, but have said it'll cost £170 (per hour) to fault find and if the faults not covered under warranty, i'll have to stump up the diagnosis cost as well as the repair.

Slightly peeved, considering the squeak commenced within a month of buying the vehicle and it was pretty much brought to their attention (service dept) straight away. Service spoke to the Manager of the Sales dept and all he said was "get it checked and i'll see if we'll cover it", not good enough in my opinion.

Anyway, service dept is willing to spend 30 mins checking it out, but not guarantee's I'll be covered for the repair under warranty.

I've read various stuff on forums, anything from power steering fluid, track arm lubing to whole steering replaced. I'm concerned that they'll just lube up whatever part they did last year but the problem will come back in time, only next time after my warranty expires!

Anyone else had the same issue and what was your outcome?
Cheers

My 2011 has a squeaky noise similar to what you describe. However if I turn the heater fan off it goes away! Must be a dry bearing on the motor shaft and turning left or right makes it squeak like a mouse. Never looked into it any further than either turning it off or ignoring it!

My squeal is there heater or no heater.

It's going in for a service this Thursday so will see what the outcome is then.

Was just hoping other's may have experience regarding the issue so I can go into the dealership fully armed instead of getting fobbed off. Considering the lubing didnt fix the issue this time last year obviously.

Reminds me of the Qantas story about the pilot who reported a mouse like squeak from the control column.  Mechanic left a note saying "cat installed"!!!

I have this. Never found the root cause, I just ignore it- yes I know that doesn't help, but do you really want to pay someone £170/hr to look for something that they may not find?
