I decided it was time to run the BMWhat app through the car to check for any faults, although there are no faults on the dash.

The report said:

Motor control :
Engine/Motor
Fault: Glow plug cylinder 1
Code:4212
Fault: Glow plug cylinder 2
Code:4222
Fault: Glow plug cylinder 3
Code:4232
Fault: Cylinder 4 glow plug control
Code:4242
Fault: Glow plug cylinder 5
Code: 4252
Fault: Glow plug cylinder 6
Code: 4262

Heating/AC:
Fault: K-Can failure
Code: E723
Fault: K-Can failure
Code: E729

CD-Changer
Fault: Audio channel error
Code: D813

Systems:
Junction box passenger
Fault: Short circuit to positive or open circuit (AUC)

I got shocked when I saw the report as there is nothing on the dash and the beast runs fine

Is that the first time you have run it???

I think you'd notice the audio issue if it was bad???

As for glow plugs, you probably won't notice much unless it is very cold!!!
Or just more smoke on start up.

Thing to do is clear them and check again after a bit..

I had a lot more faults than that before, I cleared them and waited a day and the ones listed still remain.

Like I said all runs fine and sounds.

All those glow plugs may just be the control unit rather than all plugs, but not unheard of!!

I'd check them with a multimeter first.

Glow plug control unit failure is very common on the 3L diesel, had to replace it on our 325d and also the one on our E70 3.0d needs doing but I haven't have the time yet to change and we have had the car 18 months now.

As its an inlet manifold off job to do you might as well put a new set of glow plugs in while you are in there.

After just buying a 2010 se with good spec I decided to take it to a dealership for a service, I previously owned a e53 and wanted a e70 but had the e53 serviced at a Indy. Just wanted a specialist to check ithe e70 out so thought it would be wise. After the key was plugged at the dealership they informed me that it required all filters changed. I paid the extortionate cost when I picked it it up but was also informed that a fault code had come up concerning 3 glow plugs that may require further investigation. Is this a problem as the service attendant didn't seem too concerned about it. Is it maybe because we in the UK don't experience severe winter climate yet!!!!
