Smoke from exhaust and yellow powder

Post by Tristankemp » Sat Aug 20, 2016 1:34 pm

Hi,

I'm new to this forum so would welcome any advice anyone has to give!

My E70 2008 35d started blowing grey/white smoke from the exhaust and the person behind told me there was also flames, although it could have just been sparks. There is a yellow powder left around both exhausts. I parked up and had it towed to a local garage but they can't look at it until Tuesday unfortunately.

If anybody has suffered the same problem and can shed some light I would be really grateful!

At a guess I would suggest something has gone wrong with the DPF.  Any loss of power during the incident?  any warning lights on?  It sounds like the DPF was regenerating and hence soot/sparks/smoke but it could also be something more serious in the turbo/fuelling system.

Worth checking the state of the oil & coolant to look for contamination.

Never seen anything like it reported.

What's the mileage?

On and :hi: to the Forum.

Hi, thanks!

Initially i didn't notice any drastic loss in power. At first it was just smoke and it wasn't too bad, after a mile or so I noticed the smoke was worse when accelerating and then yes there was some power loss. No engine lights until i had to move it for the recovery truck when I got the yellow engine warning light on the dash (nothing on idrive). Its done just over 100,000.
The engine was really hot so couldn't check oil/coolant. Was worried it is the head gasket!

without a code read it's going to be hard to point precisely so best wait for the dealers to get to it.  Got a warranty?
