Turbo failure x5 35d

Hi,

A local independent has my 2008 x5 35d (106k) and has diagnosed it as needing a new turbo. I understand it has a twin turbo. Does anybody have any experience of replacing theirs? I am wondering about using a reconditioned one to try and keep costs down but having trouble finding the right one as there are so many to choose from (looking on eBay)
Any help or suggestions welcomed!

Look on Realoem (BMW Parts database copy) for your car (use the last 7 characters of the VIN in 'serial number)' and that will bring up your model and give you the right part numbers to search for.

Try Essex turbos, they can do service exchange or repair yours

Not trying to bad mouth your garage but have you used them before? are they a BMW specialist?

What was the problem that made you take it in?
Have you had it long? service history?

These engines can seem like a turbo isn't working if there is a vacuum leak, one of the 3 pressure solenoids has gone, one of the turbo actuators may have stopped working.

You may just be unlucky and your turbo has gone.

The garage isn't a BMW specialist but I have used him before.
I bought the car last November. I was coming off a dual carriageway when white smoke started coming from the exhausts and felt like the engine was struggling. No warning lights at all.

I am not a mechanic but white smoke does not equal turbo from what I know, unless you really trust this garage I really would get a second opinion.
A turbo is expensive and with yours having 2 which one is it? is it both? If it doesn't cure it what then....

Have you or the garage read the codes? what were they saying?

A second opinion probably is a good idea as you suggest, worried about causing more damage by driving it though, the person behind me when it happened said the was flames!

From my experience with our local 'BMW Specialist' they are OK with cars up to the early 2000's and have issues with the new versions and certainly with 'X' cars.

Fire from the turbos will have to get past the DPF.

Definitely worth getting the error codes read with a proper system.  It could be a DPF/exhaust fire, especially as you have yellow soot.  Oil fires would create black soot (I think), as would fuel.  A turbo failure usually results on a lot of oil and oil smoke.

Warning lights don't always appear, but fault codes may well get recorded. The Carly kit has good write-ups and you can send a code dump to them.

That yellow soot on your other thread puzzles me.  Some remap specialists are very wary of offering remaps on some DPF equipped cars due to overheating and fires.  These things get seriously hot (up to 800°C).

If anyone's interested it turned out to be the smaller turbo. Replaced with a reconditioned one from fast turbos which I found through eBay, great service, fast delivery and a 1 year warranty.
I did get fault codes showing for glow plugs so will be doing these next.
