Bonnet release?

Post by kgeddes » Tue Oct 11, 2016 3:53 pm

Hi, recently purchased a 2012 MSport. Tried to open the bonnet today using the plastic release lever but no joy! I don't want to pull it any harder in case it breaks! Can somebody tell me what the secret is to opening the bonnet? Many thanks in advance....

Had another go this morning and got the bonnet released  :) Looks like the mechanisms have never, ever seen any BMW grease! Grease added and working fine now......

Good that you got it sorted. If I close my bonnet gently, sometimes one of the catches does not engage fully and the bonnet is not secured properly on one side. I now drop the bonnet rather than push it closed and this seems to work fine. Both catches are fully greased :)

I asked the question once about my old 4.8is - dealer stated greasing bonnet catches "was not a service item".
Nice.  Needless to say, I greased them myself ever since and the bonnet catch is fine. But apparently there is no onus on BMW to ever grease these catches as they "need no service intervention".
