Tail gate LED light unit replacement.

Post by moggyboy » Sat Jan 21, 2017 5:02 pm

Hi all,
My Led light has packed up on the n/s of the tail gate.
It houses a fog light which is a normal bulb and an LED for the match up to the lights in the rear wing.
It would seem you have to replace the whole tail gate piece for which BMW want £162.
Has anyone come up with a fix to replace the LED bulb? Can it be done with a bit of soldering and new LED?

The cause appears to be water inside the fitting so check yours just in case.
Any help will be appreciated as always.

If you can identify the right LEDs then it should be possible, but finding the right ones will be the challenge.  You will need to know it's operating voltage, current draw and therefore resistor required to maintain a matching brightness.

It could be a single source LED that has a part number on it.  If you can find that number then it should be possible to track it down on an electronics components supplier site.

I feel your pain, I have had to replace both the O/s inner and outer rear light units on my 3 series.
I got mine from ECP  £90 each, put your reg in on the ECP site then click on the lighting system.
Mine were Magneti Marelli ones, common on the 3 series.

Cheaper at the dealers?

I've got one on the way thanks from Eurocarparts for £95 all in v £192 collect it yourself from the main dealer.

I guess it pays to check every now and again for water in the light unit?

:)
I'm a happy bunny. Ordered at 3pm yesterday and delivered at 11am this morning. It's already fitted and is OEM!
