This might be off the mark as it's difficult without hearing the noise but my daughter's F25 X3 was making a whining noise in the lower gears which faded as the revs went down in higher gears. I realised that the noise disappeared if the fan was turned off and figured it was an issue with the fan motor. As it turned out the air con was low on gas and once regassed the noise was gone. I was sceptical when I was initially given the diagnosis by the dealer but they were spot on.

Cheers DGM,
I'll look into that, It doesn't matter if the car is cold/warm.
Upon accelerating the whine just appears, When he car is running through the gears up to my required speed it tends to disappear.
Drove up to Aberdeen from Northumberland on Thursday & thought the sound had gone as I noticed the rubber seal around the drivers door had dislodged so I secured it.
It hadn't >:(
Cheers,
Paul

Hi
You say the noise is between 1000-3000 rpm. Is the noise there when you are stationary and you rev the car from 1000-3000 or not?
If the noise is there when stationary it's likely to be engine and ancillaries related rather than drive or gearbox related. If it's there when stopped it's worthy trying to ascertain where in the engine bay the noise is coming from, it could even be as simple as a drive belt for the aircon or alternator even.
If you can post a you tube link of the noise the others may be able to also help.
If it's not there when stationary and only present when driving the car at those revs there is a well known issue with later E70's is the transfer box, and a few on here have had them replaced by BMW and it could be that which is Whining, but it's not a guarantee. Also what happens above 3000 does the noise disappear?
Are there any other signs like when you are slow speed and manoeuvring the car about it feels notchythrough the wheels ? If it is not by it could indicate wear in the drive train side. So if under warranty it would be good to get it booked in and checked by them.

I had a bit of a whine like that - turned out to be a tensioner pulley...

I had a clicking bearing sound that increased with engine speed, turned out to be the alternator pulley. They have a free wheel clutch on them not unlike a freee wheel on a bike. £10/11 for the part plus changed the idler and belt whilst at it.
Same fault was reported as causing a squealing sound by some on the net.
Can you hear it more with the bonnet up, or identify the rough location of the noise,. ?
