Hi, i bought my '60 40d last week, (think ive attached a pic, new to this!) noticed a knocking from rear wheel area on drivers side, like a tapping/knocking sound which is quite loud at 5-10 mph and gets faster as i get upto 20-30, cant really hear it after that, probably because of road noise, any ideas? thanks.

Is it linked with the speed of wheel. Does it get faster as you speed up?
Or more suspension related.
When does it knock in relation to the vehicle moving?

Sorry, saw you said it gets faster as you speed up.
Check your tyres for any de-lamination, piece peeling off.
Check Prop shafts and drives shafts, could be rubber seal or something like that flapping around under rotation.
Just a guess....

Whilst difficult to pinpoint it could be any of the above suggestion regardless it’s best to have checked by garage though ultimately, was the car a private sale, dealer sale

Id make contact with your local dealer and check if your car falls under the Quality Enhancement on the
Propshaft, possible worn Uj or splines etc.
Under the sale of goods act you have concern to request repair / refuse car,
Whilst it may be something simple, loose wheel weight, stone caught between disc and back plate, any number of suspension components loose or worn it’s ultimately an unnecessary expense considering your only one week into ownership!

Thanks for the replies, theres a lot of big words up there for someone with no mechanical knowledge, it was from a dealer, Dace German car Stockport, but the dealer is a good 90 mins away, guess ill have to take it to my local garage and then contact the dealer with the problem, does this sound like the correct way to go about things?
Thanks.

Hi Bruce just give your local BMW dealer a call ask about the QE for the propshaft and give them your reg.
If it is due in for the QE they will do the work free of charge.
