Had car checked out by indy and they found no faults. Happened some time later after going over more very rough ground....

Have you tried pressing and holding down the lock button on the key fob for a couple of seconds? If the mirrors fold in then your car has this function if not, it will need coding in, possibly by a dealer or indy.
