Well on this topic of gearbox faults lol, I finally bit the bullet ripped out alternator and replaced with a gen BM unit after the rectifier change although fixed charging issue, my x was not displaying battery symbol even on ignition for some reason, any way that's now sorted and after a few test r...

So replaced alternator rectifier and now charging properly however I v now not got a battery symbol at all even at ignition ?? And I made sure to connect both cables and and the plug.

Apologies my predictive text makes me come across like an illiterate school boy after a few fuzzy pops.

As stated I bought my X5 with a host of issues, people say don't buy a cheap BMW for a reason, I say I like a challenge, therefore when the previous owner had lost the that book and Sawa other £££ off I thought I'll have that then send off for a new Log book. Well haven't got book back from DVA yet ...

Cheers for the advice Marty, looks like a common problem on them, first got a sort an alternator to see if my gearbox issues are sorted new battery lasted 30 mile trip home, charging light flickered a bit then stayed on, so I have one coming for it next.
