If your getting the failsafe for trans, that points to a low battery voltage in most cases, as for the maf if it runs near perfect with it disconnected thats because its running on default settings, sounds to me like you need a new genuine Bosch maf (non oem mafs are a waste of time),, they are supp...

Have you got a ‘vortex’ type PCV oil strainer? BMW fitted ones that looked like a foam bog roll and these are known to clog and cause pressure build up. The later version is a vortex - no foam. You need the codes read, this has happened on here before and it was down to a steering angle sensor which was reset and all worked fine.

Ive had the initial letter for about a month now but not from the dealer, so waiting for that one, job takes 4hrs, make sure they do have all the parts to undertake the job or your car will be impounded by the dealer :x , its happened loads of times......

We have seen lots of reports about the screen wash tank too, but not relevant to your issue.

The M57 is pretty bulletproof, only thing I would say is the swirl flaps need removal and upon start up check for any smoke in the engine bay on the exhaust manifold side, they used stainless steel for the manifolds which do crack over time, there are cast ones available.....also may be carbon build...

Not sure where you have heard that but the swirl flaps only really activate when your at tick over.......

4501 relates to exhaust gas recirculation....EGR, MAP, MAF......you did say the MAP sensor you replaced was generic...if its from china then I would punt on that. You shouldnt have had that black smoke when you put your foot down....unless there's no DPF present.
