Looks to me as if the Lacquer has broken down and your left with the paint underneath.

Ok so just got back from work and had another look after reading the responses on here and it seems like it is definitely a wrap as there is a join under the bootlid near the roof. The spoiler is also wrapped and does suffer the same problem. I've checked it over and can't see any rust anywhere on the car so maybe the pics aren't very clear.

Sappireblack that pic you highlighted is actually black wrapped as well.

The shark fin is black too.

It's a relief to be honest as I can just remove the wrap and check it over for rust and rectify it if needs be.

I think it has been looked after really well as there is a lot of receipts for work done and it has a proper service history.

A few more pics to confirm.

Well potentially thats good news, you can restore the car to original. Getting the wrap off can be tricky and messy. I can recommend a great product for adhesive residue removal, CT1 Multisolve is pretty damned good but non aggresive, also paint and laquer safe.

Curious what i took to be rust actually is though?

I bet that’s a bit of relief
Apart from the obvious, that wrap looks like it’s been done really well, hopefully the paint underneath is all good and no nastys!

Huge relief. Let us know how you get on removing the wrap.

Some pics of the whole car would be good, too.

Cheers chaps, I'll get some pics of the whole car up soon and organise someone to remove the wrap when I get a bit more time. It's in for an oil service, brake fluid change and MOT on Friday with a very reputable Indy up here so fingers crossed they don't find any problems as the I drive suggests there aren't any. I'll probably get it machine polished when the wrap is off but I'll get some before and after pics to show the difference.

Pan roof problem

Not yet my friend I just haven't gotten around to it but I am going to call some local wrapping companies near me to get some advice. I have been driving it very little lately as I've been really busy with work so it hasn't grabbed my attention, if I remember I'll take some pics at the weekend. :)

Looks nice, the bonnet louvres are novel. Replacement or an original with additions? Like the wheels too, have the same on my X6, easy to clean and 'chunky', in keeping with the car 8)

Pan roof problem

I might point out that for unknown reasons my drivers door and the area under the rear door rubbing strip is a mirror image of that paint. Never sat under trees in my ownership (10 years) those areas haven’t been repainted in my ownership. It’s waiting to go to a body shop atm. They just deteriorated over the last few years. Expert opinions are " don’t know mate, never seen that before"

Pan roof problem

In the OPs case though the roof staining is known to be on vinyl wrap. The more I've looked my theory would be a car wash? The clean roof sides look to be about the extent of the vertical rollers reach, not removing tree sap or air pollution crap from the middle. Though why the horizontal rollers didn’t, one wonders.

If the wrap is coming off eventually though, it wont matter what caused it :)

Taken some more pics about 10 mins ago while I have the chance. The bonnet is "apparently" carbon fibre as the last owner still has the original (which I'm supposed to be getting but for the delivery company...that's another story) the front splitter is cf and the side skirts are add ons. Been thinking about cf wrapping the side skirts to match the splitter but not sure yet, I think the door mirrors are wrapped and possibly the wheels too as they look very smooth and shiny. I've seen a rear diffuser in cf from China for £280 but haven't quite decided yet...others seem way overpriced.
