Hi All!

After sorting my 4x4 light fault by replacing all the abs sensors, the 4x4 light comes up now about every 20 miles.

If I turn off the engine the fault resets.

Plugged it into INPA and got the following fault code DSC 5EC0 - Steering Angle Sensor.

I'm getting the bearing hub replaced soon (humming noise at around 30 mph), so hopefully it will be resolved, when I jack the front end up the front wheel has a bit of movement.

The question I have is would a failing front wheel bearing throw this fault up?

An ABS sensor failing would throw up a code for that wheel , it sounds like you need an actual steering angle sensor rather than an abs sensor . The movement at the hub is more likely to be worn arms than bearing play although the bearing is droning and needs replaced , mine was the same new bearing cured the noise but no fault codes were there for that .
Try clearing codes and see what comes back first could be an old code ?

All the ABS sensors are new, month or 2 old.

Clearing codes does not change fault reoccurring....

Steering Angle Sensor could be failing as said above.

Has anyone changed this themselves? Can't find a guide to do it? :D

Thinking of getting a 2nd hand one off eBay, as the 4x4 light coming on all the time in now and is annoying me!

Any pointers to stop this going horribly wrong? :driving:

It looks pretty straightforward to replace, but if not confident maybe buy the used* part and seek professional help with a BMW indy or other trusted workshop,

* what mileage was on the donor car? You dont want another failure a short time down the line.

My e53 experience warns me that this could be the ABS module. It never seems to give fault codes but blames everything else. ie wheel sensors, sas g/b etc. Unfortunately one has to follow the fault code but don’t be surprised if the fault returns after sas repair. Hope the sas fixes it.

Ok thanks all, I've received the second hand cluster unit will install later in the week.

Does anyone know if these need to be coded to the ECU?

Yes i would think so if changing the cluster.
Tamper dot on mileage plus the miles.
