Good Morning all, my elderly X3 has recently had an oil and filters change (every 6000 mls) shortly after it developed a rough idle and jerk / knocking sound. My local garage who did the service checked and found fault code 4B10 (smooth engine fault?) also a glow plug issue. Glow plug control unit and 6 plugs replaced about 10,000 - 12,000 mils ago.

The mechanic thinks it is a fuel injector problem and they admitted rather honestly that they are not able to help - they don't even have tools to pull the injectors out! They previously had issues in sending injectors away for refurbishment when the problem turned out to be something completely different. I would really appreciate some guidance or advice on where to start with this.

Smooth ruining controller often is one injector out of spec a garage should be able to compare them with software or do a leak off test with bottles and see which is out of spec if any.

Thanks Leslie - this is rural Suffolk, I think they're scared of fuel injectors here! Someone locally refurbishes diesel injectors but I have to identify and bring the injector(s) to him. There is also a good diagnostic guy locally but I'm not sure if he could tell me any more than the local garage.

Somebody that can use the diagnostics could see witch injector i would think.
So as said get him on the job first.
No big deal changing 2 on my older x5 3.0d but my car ran fine it was a problem starting it when hot 2 refurbished injectors and starts every time now.

Thanks Leslie & Alan. Saw the diagnostic guy this morning He couldn't identify the injector(s) via his diagnostic kit unfortunately.
It would be good to find someone locally in Suffolk with INPA who could do a Selective Mass Adjustment test - I believe this will identify the faulty injector.

Try looking for a Bosch Autocentre nearby as well. The system they use should be able to do it too. I think their system is called Autologic.

Thanks for that, surprisingly difficult to find someone in the area with suitable software other than BMW Inchcape in Ipswich. I'm wondering if I could download INPA and buy the correct cable. Does anyone have an idiots guide to doing this?

Just to add to my fuel injection woes, I did a round trip of about 10 mls miles today. There is a distinct shudder / vibration when driving, also the brake warning light came on twice. The vibration did not occur when braking, only when driving. Discs and pads were changed a few years ago and probably covered only 3,000 mls since. Brakes were checked a few months ago and all ok.
