Sat nav and entertainment system
Sat nav and entertainment system
Just bought an X5 E53 and the previous owner decided to remove the sat nav and maybe some associated bits and bobs from the boot. The small garage I bought the car from has bought a new DVD player with a disc and fitted it to a degree.
The DVD player had only one socket plugged in, I believe from memory it's the blue one, nothing in the pink, and what looks like an aerial input has nothing in it also. Can't seem to locate the other two at present, I am spending the day dismantling and photographing so will post some pics tomorrow for some help with getting the system working snd back up to spec.
Can anyone provide me with any pics or drawings of the system, all help is appreciated.

Are you referring to the DVD player as in the SatNav computer in the boot? Or a Dvd player that is connected to a screen to play movies?
The satnav, while a DVD based system, does NOT play DVDs, it is purely the satnav data dvd that it reads. The satnav will need its aerial plugged in or will not locate the satellites. Is the original screen still installed in the cars dash?
There is also usually a CD shuttle in the boot, below the satnav - and the screen in the front of the car has a cassette tape player behind it - press the upper right button at the top of the screen to get to it. later cars occasionally have a single CD player installed instead, but these are few and far between.

Re: Sat nav and entertainment system
In the dash I have the original installed unit, has a tape deck behind the screen.
In the boot is the DVD nav unit which has only one plug in one of the two sockets and nothing in the
Aerial input. Is there anything else that is obvious to any of you guys that is missing from the boot section,
I haven't got access to another x5 of similar age to compare it too.

The aerial unit in my X is in that same area, a smaller box on top of the Cd and Nav units which are both installed in the boot . I can't see your photo on my ipad for some reason, but there are usually the two boxes, nav and cd shuttle, in that area, with the aerial box on top. Will take a pic of mine when it stops chucking it down with rain
The nav unit as I said, is not a DVD player although it helpfully says DVD on it - will only operate as a sat nav, using data from the dvd. The radio unit is under the load floor behind the spare wheel, as is the tv tuner and bluetooth module, which is to the side. The front screen in the dash is just a screen really, with the tape player or single cd.
The other side of the boot houses the DSP amp if you have it installed. Lots of people stripped out the CD shuttles and Sat nav - maybe for upgrades or to sell for a few £££ - you see quite a few on ebay. The nav definitely needs the aerial plugged in to be able to pick up satellites.

Hi condor, a pic of your area would be great so That I can compare.

Aha, the photo is now visible!
You have the Cdshuttle at the bottom, the BT module as Steamy said below it at an angle, then the sat nav, which is a MkIV unit (the later one) the small black box above that is the aerial electronics and should have a lead which plugs into the satnav.
Sorry I haven't got a photo yet, will post one tomorrow and try to show connections if possible.

Re: Sat nav and entertainment system
So,what can I do with the Bluetooth module, should I be able to bond my iphone? I haven't seen that option on the menus yet, however I haven't really played that much, no manual for the entertainment system came with the car. What does the button do,in the centre pocket between the seats?

Re: Sat nav and entertainment system
Just like to add, the disc changer came complete with six discs, pet shop boys, chers albumn, some Indian greatest hits, 90's dance with song for england with John Barnes rap, and two others I haven't had chance to listen to yet. Had a two hour drive home when I picked the car up, singing away to pet shop boys all the way home.

Re: Sat nav and entertainment system
Bluetooth is not in the menu list. You need to pair the phone first. There's a how to on here if you search. May well be old pairings which need clearing out first.
It will not work with all phones and you need the PIN - should be in with the manuals - and there is no streaming audio function.
Once paired then you should see things under the 'telephone' settings.

The menu should show Telephone as an option, though, Richard, unless the BT module is dead / faulty?
@Monty -what year /model is your car? Do you mean the button in the centre console under the lid? The one that looks like a head of a person with "waves" in front of it? That is the button used for pairing phones to the BT module. If you search the forum there are lots of posts on how to do it, even a sticky I think. Depending on the version in your car, some new phones are not always compatible with the older BTversions.

Re: Sat nav and entertainment system
The bluetooth PIN "should" be on the ID label on the side of the unit..
If not you can get it using one of the many diagnostic tools posted about on here

I had assumed he wasn't seeing the word 'Bluetooth' but had 'Telephone' but it may have been a bad assumption on my part.... :-[

Re: Sat nav and entertainment system
Don't assume that the pairing code on the form is correct, my previous owner have me one for the x5 they owned before the one they sold me!! Had me stumped for days, check the module itself, the tools to remove this are in the BMW toolkit in the boot
