Hi all. I'm a newbie to the forum so hopefully I'll get some good advise/help from you guys.
So the problem I'm having is the upper part of the boot lid. It doesn't always open when I press the 'boot lid' button on the centre console.
When you press the button you will hear either: 1 click and the boot 'may' open depending on how it feels, or 2 or 3 clicks, and then its guaranteed the boot will not open meaning that someone has to get out and pull the boot lid, not hard just to ease it open basically whilst the other presses the button.
Any ideas or solutions as to why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?.
Many thanks

Assuming then it is an actuated "self opening" one?
My first thought is brushes on the actuator?
(But then not having it i couldn't tell for sure!)
not being off but it would help if you posted details of the car to aid peoples thoughts would assist..

Hi and thanks for your reply.
The model is a 2002 X5 e53 3.0d version.
There are 2 ways of opening the boot. 1 is via the button ton the key, which is somethingelse i need to get sorted and have just got a quote of £140.63 inc vat from BMW to replace - or you can press the button on the centre console.

The upper tailgate also has a release in the number plate light unit. Neither of my X5's have had powered opening, (I don't even know if it was an option) the buttons on the dash, the tailgate and the key fob only release the lock opening is by people power. My first one was intermittent so I took the number plate light unit off and discovered bad corrosion was the culprit some work with a soldering iron sorted the problem.

Ah ok..
In that case could be an adjustment issue..
The catch could be too tight and not allowing the solenoid to pop it open or even a sticky solenoid in there somewhere..

Been resarching the problem with my tailgate and i think it comes down to the 'Pressure pads'. Anyone ever heard or seen these before? Going to have a look tongiht and also have a ago at removing the tailgate switch unit which holds the license plate number lights to see if its possibly bad corrosion causing the problem.

Had a quick muck around with the upper boot lid catch last night and it seems i have sorted out the problem.. for now?! had the wife in the fornt pressing the release button on the centre console and the boot didnt open so with a bit of help from me it lifted, sprayed some 3in1 greas into the catch and manually moved the catch backwards and forwards, the boot now opens successfully without any assistance!
