ipone 4 pairing

hi i have a x5 3.0d and have just put in a iphone cradle in centre console. it does charge the phone but i cant get it to pair with the car. only thing that happens is it says on screen activate phone , but sod all happens. can any one help

will it work with a 56 plate x5
