So today I spent 5 hours trying to put a new oil separator in, I managed to get the oil return pipe out no problems.
Getting the pipe from the oil separator into the metal return pipe is the biggest PITA I have ever had the misfortune to try.
Apart from the time spent removing the oil separator, drainjng the oil so i could undo the oil return pipe, then undoing the metal oil return pioe and trying the feed it out the top of the engine I then spent 1 - 1.5hrs trying to tighten a jubilee clip that attaches the rubber pipe from the oil separator to the metal return pipe, i thought i started to cry, but it was infact just my nose running due to the 1.5c outside temp.
In the end the light faded and I decided to call it a day before I actually started crying.
I really love BMW and have done many jobs on E46's and have really been amazed at how the designers have made maintenance nice and easy.
But OMG whoever designed the oil separator and pipes on the E53 4.6is X5 must have been having a laugh on that day.
Oh well hopefully I wont actually cry tomorrow when I try for the second time to do it.

Well, look at the PLUS side of this.....
At least soon, you will have completed this little job, feel quite chuffed with your handy work and you have understood and done the task well...
You could of course sit down & try to understand Women..... Now, this task will keep you confused for a lot longer, will never be concluded or understood... and you will die having never found the answer !!!

Lol brilliant.
Well the job is done now and yes does feel good to be fair. Although it ended with me accidentally snapping the top of the dipstick off and now its about 2.5" down the metal oil dipstick pipe. Once ive got it out ill feel better.
I then changed the header/expansion tank that took all of 10 mins
