Best Forum for a UK X5 Owner

Hi everyone,

Having scoured the internet for the past 10 days I've come to the conclusion that this is the best forum for me, a new X5 owner, living in Herts.

I've just bought a 2004 (facelift), 3.0i Sport (97,000 miles) and spent several hours de-oxidising paintwork, cleaning, rejuvenating (leather and trim) and learning about the car. I must say, I love it. I've bought a great deal of car for not very much money. Next jobs are an oil change and new air filter.



My other cars are a 2010 Nissan 370z and a J reg campervan (Talbot Express conversion).

 

Your forum has already taught me a great deal about the X5 - particularly enjoying threads/posts by Sanj and X5Sport.

I have a couple of initial questions...

1. How much would my car have cost new? I've looked everywhere and failed to find the answer to this one.

2. I'm thinking of changing the automatic transmission fluid. Good idea? If so, what's the best stuff to use and what quantity will it take?

3. Currently, I enjoy using the 'manual' gearshift option. Will I be able to use it to drive more economically than 'full auto' mode?

I look forward to being an active member and learning a lot more about these lovely vehicles.

1 According to Wisebuyers around £39k

2 When I bought my X3 a few months ago I got the Transfer case, Both Diffs and the Autobox oil changed.
I used a local BMW specialist and they charged £444.
After I had mine done it was pointed out to me that the autobox has a filter and I am not convinced mine was changed so double check with who you use.

Hi and welcome along.  £39k would be the basic price, leather, automatic, sat nav, sunroof and even heated front seats were all extra so without knowing your spec it's hard to say.  £4-£5k seems to be the average amount of extras on these cars.

Hello & along.

Once kitted out and optioned my 04 X5 diesel came in at a shade over £50k including service pack.  I think it was about £40k for the diesel 'Sport' model at the time - before options.  It didn't take many options to bring the price up though  >:(

Thanks for the replies, information and welcomes - you've confirmed my feeling that older examples of these cars can be an absolute bargain - if they're sound, of course. From 40k to 4k in under 12 years seems like a steal. To my eyes they haven't dated a great deal either. Has anyone here owned one from new, for say the past 10 years? If so, you're a lucky person!

Just two more noob questions  :-[ -

1. What's the best oil for an oil change? (sorry if you've seen this one a million times before!)

2. Was a towbar + electrics a cost option, not a standard fitment, on the X5 in 2004?

Thanks for the welcome & link Sanj. I'd already had a look at it, but your reminder has prompted me to add up the cost of all my extras. I may be wrong, but at the moment it looks like my car may originally have cost this...

adaptive headlights 305 (not sure about this - I just know the lights move up & down)
xenon headlights 545 (not sure about this either - I need to have a proper look)

TOTAL PRICE (before any dealer discounts) - £45,750 (or £44,900 if it hasn't got the xenons)

...unless I've inadvertently doubled up on any of the options, or included a standard piece of equipment that I thought was an option.


Edit - Having just looked at Sanj's new post about 2006 prices, it looks like the seats may have been standard, so the true cost of my car was probably a couple of thousand less? In any case, it looks like I've just bought an entire car for the price of its original optional extras

Sounds about right.  I know the options alone on my X6 were over £14,000!  Never again!

Comfort seats were usually a cost option, though the last built ones may gave got them as standard as the E70/71 version is different - and even better 

With regards to oil.  Castrol Edge FST 0w30 or 3w30 is normal.  Look for BMW LL04 spec.  Dealers use Castrol, but you can use others as long as they are LL04 and ACEA C3.
