Time to start saving

Post by grumpywurzel » Thu May 05, 2016 2:42 pm

Just been out for a blast, gearbox seems to be playing silly buggers. Give it the beans and the gearbox seems to be Co fused what to do and get the Trans Box error, stop the car, restart and all is fine. Totally fine in manual.

Also get a high pitch squeak at the same time (used to do it occasionally before the remap too so it's not the extra power causing it)

Need to find a gearbox guru now

Find somewhere like a Bosch Autocentre or Indy with 'Autologic' who can scan the fault logs to see what is going on.  There are just too many things that it might be, though the simplest might be oil level.

As X5Sport has mentioned check auto box oil level and look at the colour,it's a good indicator if tranny oil is bad and needs flushing out with filter change as well.

Cheers guys, it's going into the garage tomorrow for a thermostat change and coolant flush anyway,  will try and ask if they have the autologic system. The oil is clean as a whistle...

Also noticed more of a thump from the rear when booting it. Do these cars have the doughnut type driveshafts? Wonder if they have perished...

Well I have had the error codes read.

Gearbox

5141 CAN Time-Out DSC
4F85 Ratio monitoring Clutch E
4F95 Ratio monitoring Clutch "B" -E

Engine

48A3 Data ASC 1
48B3 Message ASC 2
3F62 Road Speed Signal via CAN
And 5 of the 6 glow plugs (yet starts on the button in any weather)

Waiting for the gearbox specialists to ring back, for now if I want to have fun I will just leave it in manual. Seems the gearbox cannot sense the speed of the different gears, hence the fluttering under high load and then the eventual fail safe program.

your rear bushes have perished and car is moving about. Another expensive bill to add to the mix

All references against that code on line mean that it unfortunately looks like clutch slip on Pack E.  A fluid change might resolve it, and the specialist will know for certain, but if the fluid is clear then it might have had that as an attempt to resolve the issue.  Is the fault code historic, or still present?

Thanks guys will see what the specialist says. As it only happens when I give it some serious lead foot and in drive. Hopefully I can live with it for a bit while I try and save up.

Just had the box checked, yup terminal or will be within the next 6-12 months. Clutch between 5th and 6th is slipping under full load, what X5Sport said, oil was fine so no cheapish fix.

£2200 +VAT for new box, new TC with lifetime warranty, top end Oil and fitting. Will be a week without my baby soon. Considered throwing the towel in but A) put too much into the car to lose it, B) bodywork and engine is spot on and of course C) you just dont know what the next car would bring unless bought from new (not even a 1% chance of that).

Anyone fancy buying a few of my body parts???

The guys mentioned that the lurch that some of us have got is down to the software in the TCM or a lack of an update. Will let you know if it makes any difference when i get mine flashed :fuelfire:

Well my baby has just gone into the specialist yesterday, miss it like mad already. Will be gone for a week  :'(

It wasn't the only X5 there either, 3 others, one 04 plate and the other two were the same year as mine -05's. Two were in to have the TCM flashed and patched to sort out the lurch and one other was in for a new box. Felt a bit like a mini X5 meet  :)

Where have you taken it to be done? I'm thinking about getting my g/box diffs oil changed and looking for someone to do it.
