You can use anything that meets BMW LL04 and ACEA C3.  0w30 or 5w30 is fine.

I have always used Mobil 1 fully synthetic in all my BM's.....not sure about doing any sneaky interim oil changes on the new X3 as I believe the oil put in at the dealers has a dye in it so they can abdicate from a warranty claim if you have done an interim oil change....beware
Present:-
BMW X3 2.0d Motorsport Carbon Black
BMW Z4 3.0i Sterling silver
BMW S1000RR
BMW R1100 GS....Proper Tosser
Past:-
BMW X5 3.0d Carbon Black Sports Exclusive E53
BMW 330 Ci Tatainium Silver E46
BMW 5 series E39 3.0d touring
BMW 5 series E34 2.0i
BMW 3 series E30 318i

Dye? Really?  Mine not bothered at all.  They use Castrol EDGE FST 'Professional' 5w50 and if I want to change it more frequently it's fine with them.  The Service Pack & Warranty only means they'll change it for free when the car tells them, not that I can't change it.  I just asked them what they used and I went and got it - far cheaper than they provided.

First I've ever heard about dye.  New BMW engines sometimes use a lot of oil, up to 1-litre every 1,500 miles.  My E53 oil didn't stay in long enough to make a legit change until it had done more than 30,000 miles!  Dye would have been pointless.
