Well, by the time you add VAT your nearer £1.5k. It does say at the bottom all prices subject to the dreaded.

No mention of a replacement torque converter unless I missed it, I very much doubt if they are using ZF original parts as the cost of all of those bits alone costs a fortune.

Labour charges for a gearbox change isn't a great deal though (non dealer rate)

I did look at those guys when I was looking at sorting mine out,

I phoned that guy when I was looking around for my own re-build last month,..( still hesitating to do it )... he was very helpfull,... asked me to describe what was happening with my gearbox then spent at least 25 minutes describing everything he thought could be wrong without  any heavy sales pitch. Very informative and as he rightly says, give him a call,...his advise is free.. very pleasant fella to talk to and certainly knows his gearboxes...

If you have access to the tools and the parts and know how they come out then i can see 1-3 hours is doable.

The only part that may stretch that is the valve body depending on the depth of stripdown...

How much extra would the valve body be?

I believe these rebuilds are on an exchange basis... hence half day turnaround & all the right tools to wizz them out & back in again.

They strip out your box & replace it, map it to the vehicle & off you go.
The box is rebuilt at a later date.

The exchange will not include a torque converter unless you ask for it & pay the difference.

generally these people give a 6 month guarantee on the box... which should be plenty long enough to either like it of kill it, me thinks..

Can't see how these guys are making a profit though..... unless like I said they aren't using ZF bits. Oil for these boxes are costs a packet too

Speaking from personal experience (and take into account I am talking about the GM5 sp) strip and rebuild of that item alone can get to 1 -2 hours depending how far you go..
You could get the parts (Major castings and solenoids etc) for around £400 all in a while ago, then you needed  gaskets and o-rings etc.

Cant remember the price of the ZF stuff as didn't need to research them at the time!

Don't forget they have probably got good terms due to bulk / repeat purchases so would be significantly cheaper to them than to the general public.
I managed to barter 40-60% off parts when i was rebuilding mine but was very lucky in that situation as they had just had a delivery.

ZF Costs were (on mine) approx, and they only used genuine parts:

Major overhaul kit £250
Oil Pump £150
Filter £50
Torque Converter £250
Oil £160
Ancillaries (gaskets, seals, new bolts etc) £150
12-hours of Labour (17.5 to remove and refit)

Total works were £2,200 in 2009 so I would expect it to have gone up.  If their quote does not include fitting then you need to add that too.
