I had that on my 320d 3 years ago.
It was running fine no problems starting hot or cold.
Turned it off one day and went to start it 5 minutes later and it would not fire up just kept cranking.
Got it recovered to my house and did a code scan can't remember what it came up with.
I mentioned it to a m8 who is a bmw indi and he just said "electrical" (he is a grumpy bas****).
Went home and took the covers off and i could see dust like on one of the injector pipes where the wires for the injectors cross.
I lifted said wires put a rag under them and turned the key it started as normal.
Self-Amalgamating tape on all wires and ok so far.

At the end of the day surely white smoke equals lack of air temp therefore no ignition of fuel and we're back to glow plugs/controller. Or is that to simplistic a view for a modern diesel.

Surely the glow plugs are NOT getting hot, can you not check them with a meter to see if power is getting to them ??

You say you've just fitted new glow plugs. What about the controller/module. As Lez says, can't you check they are getting power. Although you'd think there would be a fault code. That sometimes depends on the quality of your code reader.

If there was a bad connection on the big plug on the bottom of the glowplug relay and it ran ok before you changed the glow plugs, this could be due that once the glowplugs were changed there was a then a greater resistance on that lead that increased load, taking power from the associated components that were needed to run the car.
Great that you managed to find the problem, especially since you had not disturbed that part.
I changed my glowplug relay at the same time as my glowplugs as it was easier to do with the inlet manifold was off, and also glowplug faults can be the related to the relay.
Main thing it's sorted.
