X5 e53 aftermarket head unit

Post by Adambirch85 » Sat Apr 07, 2018 4:54 pm

Hi, I've recently bought a 52 plate 4.4i x5. I am wanting to upgrade the head unit without  me having to pull in new wiring between the front and the boot. Does anyone know of any aftermarket head units that I can accomplish this with? Thanks adam

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Has your car have the factory fitted sat nav, or has it got the Multo information unit and single tape deck?
If it's got the sat nav then you need to run the cable.
Not a big job though

Hi thanks for the reply, yes unfortunately it has the sat nav. I’ve watched a few videos but my experience in this field is really limited. How much would you think it would cost me for an auto electrician to do such a job?
Thanks

Running the cable is simple as all you need to do is left the carpet at one edge and you can feed it in.  It’s not overly difficult to feed the loom down through the dash and removing the glovebox will help you a lot too.  That is also a fairly simple job as it’s only a few screws holding it in.

It was possible (I think) to upgrade the Mk3 CD based system (small screen display unit) to the Mk4 DVD based system and widescreen head unit without much difficulty.

An auto electrician will cost a bit in labour as it is time consuming as opposed to technically challenging. Use YouTube for pointers and give it a go, you can always put things back and visit an electrician if it doesn’t work out..

I had the same problem but being clueless about ICE installation I chose to use the proceeds from selling my other car to have the job done professionally. Including a top of the range Pioneer head unit and everything else needed to fit it it cost me £1200.

I prefer thes stock look.....so much so I wouldn't reject a car with aftermarket unless priced to allow for OEM retro fit.

Not saying contact do it but maybe  keep the original kit in a box if  all working ok.

I changed my mk3 for a mk4 (DVD on unit). It is a straight swap. Also on utube.
