Hi we have had our current E70 X5 M57 30d just over 6 years and we are thinking of buying a later F15, probably a 40d.
Current car is on 185k and it’s been very reliable apart from a few common issues that I sorted.
In comparison how reliable is the later N57’s and how common are the rear timing chain issues on them?
Reliability of the N57 3.0 Diesels compared to the M57.

I have both, an e53 30d and an e70 40d. Both have over 200,000 miles clocked.
The N57 seems a lot more refined than the M57 and obviously a lot more powerful.
I have not had any issues with the timing chain, which is at the rear of the engine, however have read of others who have online. I travelled down to Burnley 2 weeks ago as a friend was buying a 40d from a dealer down there and on inspecting the service records and receipts I noticed that the car had a new chain fitted two months prior. As I understand it they tend not to fail catastrophically without becoming noisy for a while first.
