Good Morning all, my elderly X3 has recently had an oil and filters change (every 6000 mls) shortly after it developed a rough idle and jerk / knocking sound. My local garage who did the service checked and found fault code 4B10 (smooth engine fault?) also a glow plug issue. Glow plug control unit and 6 plugs replaced about 10,000 - 12,000 mils ago.

The mechanic thinks it is a fuel injector problem and they admitted rather honestly that they are not able to help - they don't even have tools to pull the injectors out! They previously had issues in sending injectors away for refurbishment when the problem turned out to be something completely different. I would really appreciate some guidance or advice on where to start with this.

Smooth ruining controller often is one injector out of spec a garage should be able to compare them with software or do a leak off test with bottles and see which is out of spec if any.

Thanks Leslie - this is rural Suffolk, I think they're scared of fuel injectors here! Someone locally refurbishes diesel injectors but I have to identify and bring the injector(s) to him. There is also a good diagnostic guy locally but I'm not sure if he could tell me any more than the local garage.

Somebody that can use the diagnostics could see witch injector i would think.
So as said get him on the job first.
No big deal changing 2 on my older x5 3.0d but my car ran fine it was a problem starting it when hot 2 refurbished injectors and starts every time now.

Thanks Leslie & Alan. Saw the diagnostic guy this morning He couldn't identify the injector(s) via his diagnostic kit unfortunately.
It would be good to find someone locally in Suffolk with INPA who could do a Selective Mass Adjustment test - I believe this will identify the faulty injector.

Try looking for a Bosch Autocentre nearby as well. The system they use should be able to do it too. I think their system is called Autologic.

Thanks for that, surprisingly difficult to find someone in the area with suitable software other than BMW Inchcape in Ipswich. I'm wondering if I could download INPA and buy the correct cable. Does anyone have an idiots guide to doing this?

You can find that software about, have a look at bmwcoding[.]com for hints and tips.

Just to add to my fuel injection woes, I did a round trip of about 10 mls miles today. There is a distinct shudder / vibration when driving, also the brake warning light came on twice. The vibration did not occur when braking, only when driving. Discs and pads were changed a few years ago and probably covered only 3,000 mls since. Brakes were checked a few months ago and all ok.

I have a 10 second audio of the engine on idle - sounds like a tractor. Unfortunately I can't transfer the audio file from my android, tried everything! This may be a request too far but would it be possible to text or WhatsApp the audio to one of the moderators perhaps?

I did a 10 mile short drive yesterday, there was an obvious vibration in steering, a slight burning smell and fuel consumption increased by 25 - 30%. No warning lights other than run flat indicator - all four tyres are at the correct pressure.

The steering vibration coupled with the slight burning smell might suggest a stuck calliper. Ideally a temperature gun will tell you which one it is. Otherwise bushes. The smooth running really needs diagnostics to pinpoint which injector. Foxwell diagnostics do this, as does INPA but you need a windows laptop. By the time you go back and forward getting codes read and the problems fixed you will have spent twice the price of a really good diagnostics tool.

I don’t know of any way to add those type of files into this system. Usually I think you need to transfer it to your PC/Mac and then from there to a cloud service.

Given some of the responses I've received from a few local garages (one told me they would remove all 6 injectors as they would be unable to identify the faulty one in situ) I am just about to order a cable from Cable Shack, download INPA and give it a go myself.

Thanks very much henrym3 and X5Sport for your help with this. Will update when I have some news!

Can you upload the audio to you tube or a take vid with your fone and link to you tube would be easiest option.
Maybe the burning smell is a regen occurring if it has one ? had my x5 3 years now and have to say this is the first time I even noticed a regen when I got out , heat and burning smell from car

Stuck brake calipers are easy to find just look for wheel with a lot more black brake dust build up or touch wheel after a run sticking one will be warmer
I think lack of use could be an issue in all your faults here sound like you are only doing 1000 mile a year diesel doesn't keep very long now how long since last fill ?.
