Our 2013 30D M Sport is running on its original BMW battery, no issues so far but I am going to replace it as a precautionary measure. Looks a bit of a faff to replace with all the attachments on top of the battery itself, ah the good old days when it was 2 bolts on the terminals :D

I have looked on various battery suppliers sites (e.g. Tanya, Battery group, Halfords etc) but seem to get different answers as to which is the correct replacement. Every time I think I have the right one I double check and confuse myself..is it 017, 019 or 020?

Having the original BMW battery on the car doesn’t help as it has all the OEM codes on it but not the base model code (not that I can see with it in place).

Anyone know the correct battery model for this year/model? My current thinking is the two below are suitable, but they don’t come up as compatible options on some sites?

I bought a Bosch for my F25 30d SE from Tayna last year. It's the S5 A13 Bosch AGM Car Battery 12V 95Ah Type 019 S5A13.

Thanks, this is current battery, rated at 900cca, would the slightly lower 850cca make any difference? Seems the difference between 019 and 020 simply relates to the height of the battery?

Why not have a genuine refitted and coded by a mail dealer? More costly of course but it will be the right type and be properly synced to the car :)

As you said, it will be a lot more costly, why pay “dealer tax” when you don’t have to. I have a code reader that can register the new battery, just need to make sure I get the right one !

Well if you can register a new battery yourself, you're part way there. Surely the replacent should simply be like for like :)

I thought all of the 30d batteries used by BMW were 019 format AGM?

Multiple different batteries used, either 90A or 92Ah. Latest data on RealOEM lists this number: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part?i ... 1216806755

The hardware on top of the battery is the explosive cutter system (cuts main power if the airbags deploy) and Intelligent Battery System. Underneath it’s still just two 10mm nuts that clamp it on. :D

Had anyone utilised the slightly bigger 020 battery? They are more powerful and only a tiny bit more expensive so it seems to make sense as long as they fit ok.

As mentioned the 020 is given on some sites as an option, before I order just wondering if anyone has practical experience of fitting one rather than the 019 (which does appear standard).

Can't remember if there was any space left when i fitted the 019 as the 030 is slightly longer.

So for future reference, I can confirm the longer 020 battery fits perfectly. I bought the Bosch S5 A15 from Battery Group for £181, pretty good deal I thought. A bit of a pain to fit, particularly trying to get all of the wires and clamps out of the way whilst hoisting something that weighs the same a small battleship into place… but alls well that ends well. 🥵.

Here it is in all it’s mahoosive glory.

It did register the new battery no problem, however, it didn’t give me the option to enter the slightly higher capacity. I am gonna do some research on that… unless anyone already knows the answer i.e. is the car smart enough to recognise the capacity increase or does it need to be coded in specifically?

You need to code it in. If you set if too high it can overcharge the battery, which shortens its life. Mine is 5Ah under as the exact match wasn’t present in the coding (90 instead of 95). Can’t remember what the next one up was but it was too high. Might have been 110Ah.

Same with the battery ‘type’. Lead acid ‘wet’ batteries charge at different voltages to AGM ‘gel’ types. Using ‘AGM’ on a wet fitted will overcharge. Likewise using ‘wet’ on an AGM fitted will undercharge
