Tyre comfort on the G05.?

Post by Nine468 » Sat Feb 18, 2023 12:27 pm

Hi folks.
Ive currently got an 40d F15 and loving it, Ive had a X5 for the last 8 or so years be it 2 x E70,s and my current F15.

Im just looking at the next upgrade to a G05 40d..

But im wondering how they ride on the 21"/22" tyres..

I know they have comfort suspension settings, as my current car does.

Also, WHY have BMW gone to the 21"/22" wheel sizes,, have you seen the price of new 22" tyres. :o :o

Tyre comfort on the G05.?

On UK roads I can imagine as being ‘a bit jiggly’ :D

I’d also worry about damage due to the poor road service. It’s not a size I would choose by default in any case mainly because there’s no sidewall to offer much in the way of damping. I suppose everyone else is going to wheels with rubber bands attached so BMW need to do the same.

I did (for a brief moment) think about 21” for the i4 but then saw the price was over £6,500 without tyres, and tyres were about £300 a corner or more!

They do look good on certain cars though :)

I'm happy to admit I have flirted with 21" on occassions, a couple of the original designs have some appeal. But I've never committed to a set and wouldnt now. The ride must be even harder and the state of some of the roads I traverse are appalling. I have no wish to knacker my suspension even quicker, or buckle a wheel either.

My uneducated guess would be BMW are trying to capitalise on aftermarket type offerings so they can pocket even more revenue directly? I could be hopelessly wrong of course.

After much too-ing and fro-ing I settled on what I have, which is too many set as previously noted here :D

6.5k and no tyres that's crazy :o are they gold plated ? I really can't understand that sort of price for 4 wheels and do you get the 20's /original wheels to keep as essentially 20 or 21 cost Bmw the same to fit , there certainly isn't much in it ,talk about money for old rope

I had 21's fitted and tbh they were ok on my E70 and will be going back on after winter is over , not runflats though real tyres :driving:

No, just BMW ‘gold bronze’ paint. Might as well be gold plated at that price though. :o

They wouldn’t have been any good anyway. It turns out they couldn’t cope with the 2.2T the i4 weighs - heavier than my X6.

I think when the e70 was new a set of 21's like mine were 3k (with tyres) and we all thought that was a fortune which it was then how money is just devaluing now will soon need a barrow full to buy anything

I had a look and my E70 is 2185 kg so much the same as the new I4 it seems neither is a lightweight :driving:

Tyre comfort on the G05.?

I too am just about to go from F15 40 d with 20” wheels to G05 30d with 22” wheels and the dealer won’t downsize my wheels and says sell them and buy smaller if that is what you want. I prefer lots of rubber rather than fancy alloys that get easily scuffed. Any suggestions on this please?

You could try selling them on here, or on eBay. Have a look at somewhere like alloywheelsdirect on line for options. That’ll give you ideas of what to then go hunting for. The Dealer will probably offer you a new set of wheels/tyres for a suitably expensive price tag!

Dealer really wasnt interested in anything other than the car. Although the spec has most things I wanted except for towbar which is a pain as I cant get anyone to fit one due to no BMW wiring kit for the G05 model
