Differential oil

Post by andy_b » Thu Jun 26, 2025 6:30 pm

I'm going to change front and rear diff oils in my 3.0d F15.
I have ordered a 500ml bottle of each. Is this enough?
Thanks
Andy

The TIS doesn’t give the actual capacities but lists 500ml bottles (plural) as being needed, but not how many.

It also says the fill and drain plugs must be replaced, do not reuse.

It’s worse on the X6 (E71) as it has a special torque distribution rear diff with two different oils in three chambers that absolutely must not get mixed up. The outer chambers have electrically driven clutch packs that need their own special (aka expensive) oil. 500ml isn’t quite enough!
