Hey X555, what colour rattle can did you use mate? Still looking to do my door handle insert as it has a little scratch from when I bought it and it is bugging me.

Hi Russ......i used a rover colour mate. Stone Grey (met) made by Hycote. It is metalic and is slightly different in colour......if your looking for a perfect match it isn't but hardly noticeable. Depends how fussy you are i suppose.....it's good enough for me ...but then i am rough as rats :D ;)

Did you clear lacquer afterwards?

That's a real nice finish from a can.

Yes mate finished with clear laquer to protect it....i think the metalic effect gives it a nice finish and then the laquer just dulls it down enough to match up with the other trims.

It's all in the preperation though...instead of just sanding back the area i stripped it right back to the original white plastic just like when i done the steering wheel trim (and that is still unmarked now :D )
You then cover the whole thing with the same amount of paint i suppose rather than building up an area and creating overspray.
The only thing i didn't do this time was apply undercoat for the simple reason that i didn't have any and that i would have to wait untill Monday to get some.So hopefully the extra top coats should do the job...if not it's an eay respray job now i know you can get the trim off so easily

Ohh well the upside is i get to do a nice little mod on the x when i get chance :D ...makes a change from the oily greasy jobs.
Looks just like mine...apparently you have to remove the stick to get that bit out :(

considering a bit of mad masking up with a bed sheet and sourcing the right colour paint....whatever that is

Someone mentioned a rover colour once but couldn't specify....would throw some serious laquer it it too
Mike ....no need to consider a "bit of nad masking" the plastic bit will come off without removing the whole stick :D
It's easy ....just remove the press button part with a flat headed screwdriver (carefully) and then the plastic part will slide upwards once the two tabs on top are released :D
I just did mine in about 5 mins....if it wasn't for waiting for the paint and laquer to dry it would have all been done in about 10 mins ;)
1) Did you achieve all this with the knob left in DRIVE position?
2) were there any springs?
3) The video (which is a bit poor) sees him struggling to first get it out (looks bigger than I thought) then struggling to get something to align when reassembling....was this your experience?

Ta for the reply....warm weather, a few days off and a tin of paint it is then :D ....and not loose the spring I guess

Is the spring behind the button I guess and perhaps the fiddlty bit?

If you do take it apart would be most welcome but please dont screw your up for the sake of it

I think I might get the silver of my car as would be a big tin for such a little piece....then If I feel brave I might respray the chips on the wing mirror

I had time tonight to take it apart again and take a couple of pics.Pics are not the best quality as it was dark out and bloody cold too so i didn't hand around ;)

Good news is there are no springs :) just the press button/selector and the plastic trim....

prize the selector button out using a small flat headed screwdriver or similar after puting the gear stick/shifter in drive (this gives you mare room to get the driver in ;) )
This is what it looks like when out
Image

Image

Image

as you can see there is a small metal bar which moves up and down when the button is pressed. This raises the plastic shaft which lets you select each position.

When the press button/selector is out then the plastic trim part will slide upwards and off to be worked on. If its been on a while it will be snug in there but will slide up once the button is removed.
the trim with plastic clips...
Image

Image

After the respray to put it back together the button/selector must go back in first and the metal bar must line up and slot into the hole in the shaft....oo err misus
here is a pic of the groove/hole in the plastic shaft...

Image

Image

once again not the best pics but awkward to take where it  but hopefully you can see what i mean.

Line the hole up facing forward and then push the selector button back into place (it will click back into place when seated correctly) then slide the plastic trim back down onto the gear stick and job done.
To take it off/on takes about 2mins once done before. Very simple and great once done....like new again :D

You know I'd comletely forgotten about this thread and forgot to say thanks as you'd added some pictures

I'd like to ask just to clear up is this the order to do it?

1) This can be done without completly ripping the knob out of the console?
2) You put it in drive then prize the button out?
3) Slide the offending piece out for spraying? I there a particular way of prying it out given the locking tags on the side I see?
4) Push the button back in into the knob? Is this the scary....I can't drive my car bit?
5) Slide painted bit down and secure

I'd have to ask if the piece goes back in last (5) unless I've got it wrong then why wont it come out that way without removing the button?

Thanks

Mike
