New X5 M50d announced !!

Post by MJim » Wed Jan 25, 2012 1:32 pm

Picked up a copy of Autocar today. Interesting articles on new BMWs coming through. X5 M50d - three turbos, 0-62 in 5.4 secs, goes on sale in June. Also X6 M50d, M550d saloon / touring...

You know you want to !!

There's a queue for the X6 version in the E71 forum too - methinks it's going to be a real seller in the X5 version with 360+bhp even if it is an oil burner, but as the US will not be getting it, Europe will be the prime market - well apart from the Middle East. The torque is going to be very impressive. 5.4secs for a 2-tonne plus vehicle is stupidly quick. The 40d versions aren't exactly slugs are they!

Defo want a test drive though!!

It's going to retail for £60k, the X6 for £62k. No doubt a load of the toys I added to mine will be standard, so the hike over the 40d not so bad. Would have been an easy choice if it'd been around when I bought mine, but I can't justify the cost of changing now as tempting as it may seem. I look forward to M50d members appearing here! I guess the car's a last swan song before the next gen cars are announced in 2013... I agree a test drive would be fun, so long as it was somewhere you could open it up!

the M550d though is going to be 2Wd only I read and therefore probably even more difficult to drive than the M5 with respect to traction !

Already had this conversation with friends in the middle east......they only see diesel as something they sell to us :D

Sounds pointless to me, i think BMW need to pull their finger out and make a proper diesel engine (more than 6 Cylinders) like Mercedes, Audi, VW

Why? Their 6-cyl units have been winning awards for years. 370+bhp and 740Nm of torque from a 6-cyl is plenty enough. The unit is lighter and less complex. Perhaps it just says that the other manufacturers can't do it except with 8 or 10 or 12 cylinders. If the idea works, don't mess with it. More cylinders doesn't make it a 'proper' engine. Some if the next gen ones will have only 3.

Look how long, and how many variants Rover/Leyland and LandRover went through with the V8. Same with the old Austin 4-cyl 'A'-series. The design basics worked so got tweaked but were otherwise fundamentally left alone.

The 40d has them as standard so I can't imagine them not being included by default. I thought all E71s had them.

I see both sides to this

Yes it is obviously a good engine but I also agree with the comment about it hardly being a premium engine in a what will be a £60k car and can be had in a 3er for half the price!

It isn't the nicest sounding engine
