Hi sanj, I got 1 from maplin £15 but I'll get another off flea bay for around £6, so I plug them into both the red and white line in sockets and then put all the green cables into the other end of the isolators? Sorry if I should dumb but just want to get it right

Exactly, not dumb at all!

They call it 'in-line'.

Hi, well i put the maplin isolator on and there was an improvment but still some whine when pressing the accelerator, but gone when at standstill, when i then added the second isolater bought from flea bay there was no extra difference, just the same as with one fitted. could it be because its a cheaper quality? or is this the best im going to get? when i uplug them you can certainly hear the difference, but its still there none the less when fitted.

any more ideas guys?

thanks

That sounds about right - you're only masking a problem that's still there.

One added will make it better but then you need to fiddle with the amplifier settings. There will be one for gain - make sure that is down (not so much that you can't hear the audio)!

The treble and bass setting on the headunit next.

Well done for working this out by yourself btw! :ok:

Thanks :) wich one is gain? When I turn the head unit up I can't hear the whine so will altering the settings on it make any difference, the whine is worse when the head unit is switched off?

Grrrrr really wound up now, managed to get it do I can barley hear the whine, with altering the little knobs on the amp, but as soon as I put it back where it goes and secure it, the whine returns. This is also what happens when John thought he'd fixed it, as soon as he drive away it came back. I've had it back out twice, whine goes, put everything back it returns. Somebody please put me out of my misery

Sounds like a broken wire somewhere to me if it comes and goes when you move it.

Sounds like the amp is earthing itself through the chassis to me.......had this once with an amp and had to make sure that it wasnt touching anything metal in the car........this could be interesting to sort out though  :(

im no expert on this but lots of trial and error and finally i have a well tuned amp and sub. so i could be wrong as well  :))

what you have is a very common issue of the input wires picking up noise from the engine. the solution is pretty simple as well and is the 'lump' you see in most a/v cables, etc. its a filter, ie, a magnet through which the wire is coiled looped through a few times.

have you put a filter on the input line(s)? try putting a filter as close as pos to the amp end of each input line (you've mentioned an isolator. isolators sometimes don't filter ambient noise. they work in 2 diff ways. isolators will isolate the circuit to provide a physical separation of input and output, but pass on the same frequency wave, a filter will filter out ambient noise but not necessarily separate input and output - so i hope you fixed the right one. some claim to do both but i have little faith in those...)

to be clear on the difference:
isolator:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Boss-Audio-Gr ... 1487wt_905

filter:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RFI-EMI-Noise ... 1135wt_952

another thing to check - is the amp grounded properly. I had immense trouble getting my amp tuned properly.  (symptom though was different). eventually turned out to be the amp not being grounded properly.

Hi all,

Quick update

John agreed he didnt know how to fix the problem, so arranged for me to send it to a specialist in Blackpool to have a look. well he had the car for 3 days and basically ripped everything out and started again, He said the cables john used where not very goo and used better ones, re-routed them away from the power cable, as these shouldnt be together as this causes interference. put filters on the cables. and moved the fuse. insulated the amp and then spent a hole day tweaking everything untill he was happy with the quality of sound.

well it worked  ;D no more whining and great sound.

very happy girl here. Thanks to all that offered great advice, especially Sanj for being so patient with me.

Too kind,  :ok:

That's nice to hear and not too great that John couldn't resolve as everything you've said is common sense.  :noexpression:

No disrespect to John btw...

But at least you have a system that you are more than happy with (by the sound of things) and well done for sticking to your guns!
