Post by Gazzi c » Wed Aug 01, 2012 1:22 pm

Hi all I am planning on getting a touring caravan soon so I need a tow bar fitting to the x what's the best detachable one to go for I would like one that uses the cars original wiring loom so it automatically disables the rear pdc's and fogs etc. cheers gaz

Hi Gaz,

Westfalia Towbars are as close to OEM as you can get as they make the hardware for BMW AFAIK.  Some folks here who have done it reckon that PF Jones is a good place to source all the kit from.  You need to make sure you get the full electrical kit though as some do not include the power feeds for a fridge etc.

BMW always want silly money to do these things 'post build'.  My Dealer told me that to fit one afterwards to either the X6 or Mini Countryman would be of the order of £2k by the time labour and VAT had been included.  £600 new on both at build was a bargain considering - though not exactly cheap!

Got the Witter detachable kit for mine a few years ago.
Fitted like a dream and had the trailer electronics unit in the package.  Just plug it in the space next to the battery and all sorted.
Didn't need to code car or adjust anything.  It stops the PDC & Fogs and provides trailer light failure detection also.

2 years ago from PJ Jones £180 in 13pin electrics (Which also plugged into a socket in teh boot behind a trim panel)

Take car though as it is heavy especially when dropped on your foot.
Ask me how i know!!!
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...

But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)
