4.6 oil
Re: 4.6 oil
Castrol Edge 0W30 or 5W30 is probably your most common suggestion. You can use others, but make sure they meet BMW LL04 spec, and ACEA C3 is recommended too.
There is a long and sometimes heated debate all over the world about the transmission fluid changes. What's the mileage? Some say never, others say 60,000 miles, others still say it could wreck the box, others yet say best thing they ever did......confused? Me too  :crazy1:
What is generally accepted is that 'Sealed for Life' is now not what it sounds like - ie never touch - but more that it is the 'life of the car in manufacturers terms', and that is 5-6 years and/or 60,000 miles. Whatever you decide, read widely and carefully first!

Re: 4.6 oil
I've been considering getting the gearbox oil changed in my 3.0d which has 75k miles on it and having researched it I'm more confused than ever. I was talking to the service manager at a local BMW dealership who told me the best thing I could do for the car is change the transmission oil. This was backed up by the auto box specialist who I'm using to change the oil.
However, when I mentioned to the service receptionist at the same BMW dealership that I was getting it done, she stated that one of their technicians was just back from a BMW automatic gearbox maintenance course and the advice given there was never to change the oil. The reason given was that the viscosity of the older oil would be far thinner than the new oil and that putting the thicker new oil in would cause the seals to fail.
God knows what the correct answer is.
