Just visited Williams BMW in Liverpool and they confirmed I need to have an inspection 2 service. Went to Haliwell Jones another authorised dealer who said the E53 only has an inspection 1, oil and filter, inspection 1 etc etc. Proper confused now. Anyone else had the same conflicting info?

Didn't that change on some cars, dependent upon age, to Oil, Insp 1, Oil, Insp 1 ad infinitum but on every 3rd service some extra bits are done i.e. fuel filter, air filter.

That is why I am confused see. If BMW are not consistent what chance have I got. There is a big cost difference between 1 and 2. If it needs a 2 then I'm happy to pay it.

never knew that either. so only oil service and inspection 1 for diesels?

Yes - I was told this a while back as well.

But most service departments don't realise and still say the diesel needs an  Insp 2.  ::)

Yes, that is correct.

You do get after every third oil change some other bits to be done - like fuel filter.

so if it goes oil, inspection1, oil, inspection 1 and so on  ..... if the five lights go out after my last service, then it is just an oil change and they reset the lights, or is it another service ?

Lights reset after each visit....

Oil, reset to 5 lights, Inspection 1, reset to 5 lights, etc.

What's the mileage - only ask as the breather and air filter should be changed (if not already done). Can be a DIY.

My mileage is 71800. It was 69k when I bought it 2 months ago and the garage did an oil and filter only change before I collected it. Hence the reason for the enquiry to BMW as to what comes next. It had an inspection 1 at 30k, fluid and brakes at 38k,  then an oil and all filters changed at 53k(is this an inspection 1??). Doesn't seem like it stuck to the proper schedule which is why I want to have an inspection 1 or 2 next time which is advised at 80 to 85k by BMW.

Hi, in the BMW service book for 3.0d under Maintenance Summary inspection 2 it says that it is all of inspection 1 plus Air intake silencer(charged additionally) renew air cleaner and then Renew spark plugs.
I am reading that as -fit new air filter and don't forget to charge, also fit new spark plugs (not relevant).
When I bought my car I saw this and decided that its definitely not getting an inspection 2 when it needs it, and if I am honest, when I had read through the details of inspection 1, I am not seeing anything in there that an mot or a responsible owner (check coolant etc) won't find.
As I paid £159 for a BMW oil service last time around, it may well be that it only receives oil services at BMW from here on in and the money saved will go towards making sure if it needs something it gets it. I did price up an oil service at an Indy, but he simply couldn't compete with the price BMW offered for my year of car (2006).
I am quite lucky as the previous owner serviced it every year, regardless of the service lights, so I am carrying that on for the sake of £159 a pop, because as we all know that sort of figure is quite small relative to what it can cost when things go wrong!
This is just my thoughts and I welcome any other take on it.

No 'inspection 2' carried out on the diesels.....so no need to worry about that one.

If you have not already had it done though, it's worth getting the vortex oil breather changed if it's the foam bog-roll version.  An '06 it should have the updated 'vortex type' version fitted, but a number of Owners have found that they still have the earlier version which clogs and can cause engine issues.  Next time the air filter is being done, add that job to the list.
