Safezone.......coming to the UK

Despite Government cuts reducing the number of active speed Scameras (for now), the approval of SICORE has got the go ahead.  Trials are already underway......Poole, Dorset is one zone.

These are the new gen of 'safety' cameras that can do everything automatically, ANPR, speeding, traffic monitoring etc, and can be placed as close as 75 metres apart.  They also cover very large areas as the whole system is interconnected.  Fines are issued automatically.

Now whilst I don't have an issue with these devices in principle if they are placed in legitimate areas, I do see this type of system just being a money maker given its inbuilt capabilities.  This country has become obsessed with 'controlling' the motorist yet does nothing to ensure new drivers get proper training on how to drive, not just operate a vehicle.

Look out for these on a pole near you soon.......

:upset: the problem is the amount of money it takes to implement and run these schemes.  They're never value for money so the only way to cover the extortionate costs is to plant them in as many places as possible to rob the law abiding drivers of this land!

Great idea - as long as they automatically pick up uninsured/banned drivers and get a patrol car straight on them to remove them before they crash into my car.  Unlikely, so just a cash machine in disguise.

Totally agree with all the comments especially about young drivers,they need more trainig/ restrictions engine size etc.

I agree with this - would be so easy for them to get all uninsured cars straight off the roads.  In London we've had the whole congestion charging network of cameras that could easily have been put on the case.  I'm assuming the police force don't want the hassle of chasing down the drivers, when the only cost is seen as being a financial one ...

Front or rear facing?

I noticed that on the M25 they have installed loads of SPECS now all the way from the M26 to Godstone, both front AND rear facing ones so even bikes are no longer safe there then.

It will be cheaper to buy a foreign plated car and run that for a year at a time, which is fully legal and avoids all this stuff.

Shame you can't put European plates on a British car. I'm generally pretty law abiding but these cash in on all drivers measures wind me up.  I was done for stopping a few seconds longer than permitted in a yellow box as the driver in front suddenly changed his mind and blocked me off. £60. Ker ching ker ching. Thank you very much sir.

why dont we all club together and buy a house in bulgaria or poland or somewhere and register every x5 to the address, hold an x drivers meet there once a year for their mot, what it would save in ultra cheap insurance and no road tax, not to menchion never paying a speeding ticket or parking fine again hmmm

Same in the newly widened section of the M25 between the M40 and M1, although these aren't SPECS they are 'from behind' so everything is in view to them.  There were also some new SPECS cameras on the Essex section around the M11 as well.

My Road Angel keeps telling me about a load of new sites.....mostly mobile units.....and usually empty, but once in a while there's a van there.  Locally they're using Smart cars with CCTV on little masts and drive around snapping every offender they can find.  No traffic wardens anymore, just cars with cameras.  It's getting sillier by the month.

MOT is only every other year in Europe (a racket in the UK ). We only have to see each other every other year then  )

What about times when overtaking? It is legal to exceed the speed limit to safely overtake another vehicle. It is also legal to exceed the speed limit if you are in fear - i.e. if you feel you are being followed or chased.

Officially, it is never legal to exceed the speed limit. Only mitigating circumstances in court to get no penalty, but still be found guilty.

When I learned to drive in NL, it was indeed legal to exceed the limit to perform a safe overtake to avoid being in the danger zone longer than necessary. On my exam I had to overtake a military convoy as it was doing about 45 km/h in a 50 km/h zone so I overtook it at about 55 - 58 to get past it.
