smoke from engine on start up

Post by BIG DIN » Tue Dec 18, 2012 4:07 pm

When i start the car from cold i have noticed smoke coming from somewhere on the side the turbo is on. Its not heavy smoke but noticable. Its not there when i check once the cars warmed up a bit.
Anybody have any idea where it might be coming frombor causing it?
Its a 54 plate diesal.

I would bet that it smells like diesel? Cold start increase in fuel, I understand it's normal. The colder it is, the more mine does it, but not at all when warm.

Just check it's not from the Webasto exhaust which is under the front passenger seat (under the car) and it's not blowing into the engine bay and frightening you unnecessarily.

Other than that it's going to be a case of looking for split hoses in the turbo side between it and the inlet manifold.

It's not oil burning off the exhaust manifold or a leaking exhaust is it?

It's definitely coming from the turbo area if you open the bonnet and stand watching during start-up?

Could be cracked exhaust manifold. Quite common.

Thanks for the reply guys.
Its definately coming from the turbo side and saying that there is a oil leak somewhere but on the other side of the engine.
It does smell of diesal so am hoping its just what Riggie is saying.

Sounds like a cracked manifold or gasket leaking somewhere in the exhaust system,  you can usually see a puff on start up,

As the manifold heats up the crack closes,  get it checked out as you may start smelling fumes in the cabin

Sorry, I misread the post and didnt realise you meant in the engine bay. I had this with my 530d and it was a cracked tinfoil exhaust manifold. A common problem which I rectified by fitting a cast iron manifold.

Hey guys just thought update to my question having finally had a chance to have a proper look at this.
Luckily I say at the moment we found the connection on the egr pipe going into the engine was causing the leak of smoke and you could see it puffing out when pressing accelerator.  Thinking the clamp had come loose tried to tighten it but ws already tight so for now took the pipe off and put a bit of exhaust paste around the joint and clamped it back up which seems to have solved the issue a bit but have ordered a new pipe.
This also resolved the power loss issue too that I got.
