Rear alloys with matching scratches

Post by tiger78 » Sat Jan 05, 2013 5:57 pm

Hi,
Picked up my car on Xmas eve and just washed it today.  Noticed the rear 2 alloys had almost the identical scratch on them.  Defo not something I have done so plan a trip to the dealer on Monday. Anyone seen anything like this before?  The alloys ate the 333 type I believe.  Below is a pic of each alloy

Thanks for help in advance.

Not a nice find.  Also strange place for scratches, not somewhere I would imagine an over zelest tyre fitter could damage through poor use of tools.  Hopefully the dealer will just repair.  Let us know.

The uniformity suggests a wheel storage issue to me.

Rear alloys with matching scratches

The only thing I thought was when someone was inflating the tyre - but todo it on 2 rear wheels seems strange. It will be trying to prove it with the dealer now ...,,,

Rear alloys with matching scratches

Post by tiger78 » Sun Jan 06, 2013 5:45 pm

Well after looking closer today- it seems to be the tyre valves are bending over and rubbing. All tyre caps are metal. It only seems to be the wider wheels at the rear that have been rubbing. Dealer trip tomorrow it is!

Is it not caused by the exposed wire end of a wheel brush, couldn't see how the valves would bend that much :(

nope i have never used a wheel brush - with the car only being a week old all it needed was hot soapy water.  I pushed both valve caps over and it lines up exactly where the scratches were.  Not sure if bmw have changed the valves or soemthing they use for longer stem ones recently?  Im kind of glad i have found this as now i can go and physically show the dealer.  a aimple plastic cap would have resolved but the alloys are marked now.  i will update tomorrow after going to BMW.
i cant believe im the only one that has had this.....there were a few other X5's being delivered when i got mine so maybe its a batch thing - or im ultra fussy!!

Yeh new car - yes the wheels are the upgrade.  Yes I will be looking at a full replacement as they are diamond cut and seem different colour on the inside.

Thanks for the comments

Yes diamond cut can only generally be repaired once so you don't want to use that 'credit' on a fault!

Good luck and keep us posted.

The other thing it could have been it the valving tool when the tyre valves were 'pulled' into place.  Defo replacement required!!

well we came to suitable agreement today when he saw the "scratches"

He took out his thumb - rubbed hard and they disapeared..........oops.  seems like some sort of wax had came off the tyre cap/valve and had set on my wheels.  Chuffed to bits but slightly embarrased!!! :-[

cheers for the comments though!!

Let the ripping commence...!!!
