MPG 3.0D 2002
MPG 3.0D 2002
Hi All
I have purchased a 2002 3.0 D a few months ago and ever since I have had it the MPG has never gone over 19.2 for both even on the motorway. I have recently had a service and this has not made a difference.
Having looked on several posts this does not seem to be the norm.
During the service the garage did say that all was well with the car but I am completely convinced.
Any comments would be great.
Thanks

Re: MPG 3.0D 2002
Is this using the on board computer? Have you checked it manually against a full tank to full tank to see if there's a calculation error? It certainly doesn't sound normal unless you are doing urban driving with a lot of stop/start traffic.

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
Re: MPG 3.0D 2002
As X5Sport has mentioned the computer could be wrong , there is a correction factor setting in the hidden menu I hear, this may have been altered. So his advice on a brim to brim MPG calculation is the way to go.
I have the 3.0 d facelift version and that returns 25 MPG urban and as much as 34 MPG on a run if you keep it to 70, or 32 if you stick to 80 MPH.
19 MPG is 4.8 territory .

Hi Thanks for the replies
Yes the readings are on the on board computer, on a full tank from empty I get a reading from the computer of around 425 miles (£123.00)
I do a few stop/start trips in london in the week but the MPG has never changed, is there a way to reset it? How would I reset the correction factor, if so does this improve the MPG?
It is a X5 Sport if this makes any difference.
Many thanks

That's for the hidden menu.
And no it won't do more to the gallon, just register a true figure.
It depends on if you have the satnav screen or the MID unit installed as how you reset the consumption 1 &2 readings on your X

Re: MPG 3.0D 2002
Bear in mind that the consumption numbers are cumulative and it may be that you have a long history of miles and fuel use that you are expecting to alter mile by mile - that just won't happen. I think you need to reset the individual consumption numbers on the OBC and see how the numbers change over the next couple of hundred miles.
I don't recall how this is done now as it's three years since I sold our E53, but I do recall the 'reset' option comes up on the OBC screen.
Brimming the tank is the best way to check real fuel consumption/economy though: good luck!

Is the car getting up to temp (halfway on gauge) and staying there? I know I say really bad mpg when my thermostat was knackered.

Re: MPG 3.0D 2002
If you are stop start in London, and short journeys, that will hammer your Mpg, as mentioned you need to reset your trip computer and take it on a good run out away from heavy traffic conditions.

Hi guys
Thanks for all your posts, I have the MID unit so have followed the instructions posted by HORIZON and this has reset the MPG on CON1 & 2, great )
The temp gauge is half way and staying there.
Just checking the KVBR should be set to 1000? mine was set to 990

Re: MPG 3.0D 2002
I would think you should be getting more than that.
On a recent trip from Bristol to Crawley and back my OBC read 41.5mpg when I got back I re-filled the tank and the calculation worked out at 41.3 that was with a very very light right foot and in the slipstream of the odd lorry
I was in no hurry and just wanted to see what I could get out of the 2 ton beast.
Normally on a run I get about 34mpg at 70mph or 26mpg at 60mph with a 1585kg caravan on the back.
My OBC computer 1, that I have never reset, reads 23.1mpg and that is over 2 years motoring and most if it stop start to and from work.

Let us know how the consumption numbers pan out over the next hundred miles plus. Good luck!

Re: MPG 3.0D 2002
Not sure if this is any help, but mine gets pretty much spot on the handbook 29.1mpg on average.
We do a pretty wide range of driving, a good deal of motorway and rural roads, lots of short trips, but no city driving.
If you do nose to tail commuting in congested traffic, the mpg will be much worse. IMHO.

Re: MPG 3.0D 2002
I've got an '05 re-mapped and I've just been over to Blighty on hols .
I got 44 mpg on the way there with cruise on 125 kmh and 38 mpg on the way back with cruise on 145 kmh
Urban whilst I was there got 31 mpg although normally round Lux on school run etc it's more like 28/29 mpg .

Hi guys, the MPG has improved a little between 21 and 24 MPG in town. That is stop and start London traffic though.
May go to Birmingham this weekend so will let you know how I get on
