Optional extra, as it is on the newer models too.

Bored at work - apparently retrofitting voice recognition is a fairly easy process. Just buy the module from BMW and plug into back of the nav unit. Anyone done this mod and can confirm?

Thanks

Don't think it's that easy. You need the microphone up by the mirror, ulf module and a rack of wiring

Ok - done some more hunting on the net and i think ubatoid is right. Not that simple. Phoned bmw parts for rough price on voice rec module and my x5 doesn't have the right software apparently.  :(

Already have a mic as i can make handsfree calls from the x5 using bluetooth. What is a ulf module?

It's the Bluetooth Control Module.  You just need one with VR built in.  Needs to be 6th generation or later for that.  6th Gen hardware ceased installation in 10/05 and started on 01/05.  Best ones are 13th Gen from 2007.  You may have a 5th or 6th gen unit.

5th gen are part 84 21 6 945 387
6th gen are part 84 10 6 955 522

So i'm confused....do i just get a new BT module with VR built in? Will this be compatible with my x5 even though some parts guy says no?!? Mine is a 54 plate x5.

I wanted to get Bariss (or whatever his name is) to update my BT module anyway so i can stream music via BT....can i get a later version BT module and just plug n play for VR???

Thanks

As far as I know the modules are just plug and play.  They are silly money though.  You can try getting one on ebay though but check it is fully working.

All the suitable GSM type ULF units are here.  Go as late as you can.  They are also called TCUs and cost £hundreds new.. :o >:(
