Xdrive badging - confused?

Post by durris38 » Thu Jan 30, 2014 8:22 am

Hi

I am new to the forum and I am looking into buying an X5 in the next couple on months and thought a look around here would be useful.  I am still however puzzled/confused as to the differences betweenthe xdrive3.0d, 3.5d and 4.0d!

I wondered if anyone would be good enough to take the time to assist with this confusion? Also which model year saw the introduction of this badging and which year introduced the improved idrive with the shortcut button at the controller?

Apologies for asking such simple things but getting the answers even with the power of the web is proving challenging!!!

Many thanks in advance.

Best regards.

I bought an E70  X5 in October 2009 and it was one of the first to come out with the improved Idrive with shortcut buttons.
It was an Xdrive 35d (the choices back then were 30d or 35d).  The 35d differed from the 30d in being a bit quicker and with more bhp. It was essentially the same engine i think but had an extra turbo, 2 instead of the 30d's 1.

Some time after - I believe April 2010 - the 35d was dropped in favour of the 40d, so the choices were 30d and 40d. Once again it was a 3 litre engine despite the "4" in the title, but it was faster and now came with an 8 speed autobox instead of the 35d's 6.

It'll be allright in the end. If it isn't allright it isn't the end

As above.

30d is a single turbo - unless it's an 'SD' in which case it's the first of the twins.  It is a 6 speed.
35d has a BHP and torque increase and is the second twin turbo version, also a 6 speed.
40d is the highest power an torque (unless you go M50d) has the 8-speed transmission, updated iDrive and the 40d is also a cleaner more economical version of the 3.0L engine so has lower car tax.

Owners of the 35d frequently report higher than expected fuel consumption.

Hi
I was fortunate enough to get to test drive all variants,if your budget allows,go for the 40d with the 8 speed box its a far better car and much improved.
The 40d is cheaper to tax and more economical ,the performance is fantastic.
hope this helps,if not go for a later single turbo 30d.

282 v 286?  Could one be using BHP PS and the other BHP at the wheels?  It's not a huge difference I agree.
