Hi all, I'm new to the forum but would just like to report a scary incident that happened to me on Monday. My E70 is a 3.0L MSport Xdrive reg April 2010 with 35k, I've had it since January from main dealer.
It's back with them and I'm in hire car waiting for injector parts. I was driving along a B road fortunately close to home and suddenly lost everything. No warning lights, no noises, stuttering anything just dead. Radio off, lights out, power steering unengaged and just coasted to a stop over a short distance.
If there had been anyone behind, or I'd been on a busy or faster road I hate to think of what might have been. Tried to restart, nothing. I really wanted to move it because I was half way up a winding hill. I got out, locked it, waited a couple of minutes, unlocked and it started. So I drove to the nearest safe spot and waited over two hours for BMW assistance.
This has been reported to me as a single injector failure - is this plausible? It was a pretty catastrophic effect.

Is your 3.0L petrol?
Re: Injector Failure - Sudden Loss Of All Power
Hi, no diesel. I have also got a much older 3.0 petrol (E53).

Hi there
It is possible for the engine to cut out if one of the injectors records a fault , they are connected in banks of three and if there is an intermittent fault with one it can cut the engine.
Seen this myself so I would be a little more confident with the info the dealer has given you.
It's annoying the problem you have had but this should sort it.
Cheers

Re: Injector Failure - Sudden Loss Of All Power
As stevox5 has said, probably shut down due to seeing a faulty injector.
The new VAG stuff sometimes shuts the engine down if you get an injector down, the older solenoid type of common rail injectors never gave this issue when they went down but most diesels after 2007 are using piezo common rail injectors and they are a different story.

Re: Injector Failure - Sudden Loss Of All Power
Thanks for the replies. Stevox5, how often have you seen this? I do feel better that it will solve this problem and maybe just as well it happened so soon after purchase and in warranty. But isn't this a rather drastic reaction to the failure of one injector?
If it didn't used to be the case as suggested here, then I feel it's a step backwards. I certainly wouldn't have wanted this to happen on a dual carriageway or motorway. That would have been extremely dangerous.
So I feel happy that it's likely to deal with this fault, but I'm unsure how content I can feel about the possibility of one of the remaining five not repeating this drama at some point.

Re: Injector Failure - Sudden Loss Of All Power
I have only seen 3 cars with this issue and none of them have had to have further injector replacement since.
Not a common issue I'd say mate.
