battery drain

Post by Jayx5 » Sun Mar 16, 2014 8:14 am

Morning ,my x5s battery started going flat so I put my multi metre on the battery and started pulling fuses out and found it was on the sat nav/stereo circuit so I thought it was the sat nav as it had been spitting out the CD! Unplugged the sat nav,Charged up the battery and it was still flat the next day! Had a quick look online and read a few things about the tm draining the battery so took that out and it's now fine. The tm module (next to the bm54 amp) is not fitted by bmw and is fitted when it comes here. It's just soldered in the amp wires and covered in tape!
So I plugged my sat nav back in and that still drains the battery! I unplugged that again and car is fine but I am left with the basic blocky menu screen! Is there anything I can do to get the nice menu back without getting the sat nav fixed?

Have you been doing the checks with the car 'asleep'?  If it's awake then the nav drive keeps running.  Similarly pulling fuses can wake the car up again and may give you false leads.

The car goes to sleep for about 5 secs then the nav comes on and wakes it up again. This happens none stop till the batterys flat. Could it be the tm has busted the nav? Or could it be the CD?

Try taking the disc out and leaving the car.  If the drive keeps spitting it out it anyway then it may be part if the cause of the system trying to read it and staying awake.  Is it a genuine disc?  If not, then put a genuine one (borrowed if you know of one) in and see if that sorts it.

It could be the TM unit going faulty - cut the power to it to check.

The disc is not a bmw one but has been fine since I've owned the car(16 months) . The tm module is now in the bin but will try the nav plugged in again but without a disc. :-[
