Correct tyres sizes for 20" 2002 X5 4.6l Alloys?
Correct tyres sizes for 20" 2002 X5 4.6l Alloys?
Hi guys,
I'm looking to buy a set of the 4.6l 20" 5-spoke alloy wheels for my 2002 3.0l X5 E53.
All sellers with these wheels have 275/40/20 on fronts, 315/35/20 on rears.
One seller has 275/40/20 on fronts, 295/40/20 on rears??..
Can this work, or are they incorrect? What are the disadvanatages & advantages of these different tyre sizes?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Re: Correct tyres sizes for 20" 2002 X5 4.6l Alloys?
Hi and welcome,
The 275 front and 315 rear are the standard width for the OEM wheels that came with the 4.6is, the aftermarket brigade sold replicas with a narrower width to help keep the cost down. But the advantage of the narrower wheels for you is that they will fit the wheel arch better, as the 4.6is came with wheel arch extensions to take the extra width of the tyre.

Thank you for the reply. So these wheels won't be genuine then?

Wheels may be genuine but you need to see if they have the relevant stamps on the back of the spokes to show the BMW part number etc.
I'd personally prefer the correct 315 rear. If the wheels are genuine then nothing wrong with running that rear tyre for the time being and one they need replacing to with the correct rear size.

295/40 is not the correct profile and you need to check the rolling circumference to see how far off it is. Wrong profiles with larger rolling circumference can cause transmission 'wind up'. 315/35 is good though as Raj & Don say.

I'd already checked and 295/40 will be acceptable although not ideal.

The seller has given me the details from the insides of the wheels…
Fronts: X20EH2, 6753516, IS45, E9.5J
Rears: X20EH2, 6753517, IS30, E10.5J
Are they genuine then?

Chodecz pm'ed me the same question and I told him I didn't think they were OEM. The reason being, my 20"s are J10 and J11. Can there be two different wheel widths but the same tyre widths used?

I also just replied to his PM.
They are indeed genuine and the part numbers match.
The OE 20's (depending upon E53, E70, E71) can come in fronts 9.5J and 10J, rears 10.5J and 11J. All run the same front / rear tyre sizes.

Many thanks Raj, X5Sport & Don Coffey, you're advice has been very helpful!
I'm gonna buy them, then I'll just buy some correct size 275/40/20 & 315/35/20 tyres!
