I understand what you are saying about the waste of money but the TC refurb company did say the TC was worn but maybe they would . Anyway that I can't change now and at least its done.

I will check the tyre sizes later today and I didn't know about the scorpions being winter tyres.
I think I will change the front tyres first and fit 275s summer tyres.

If I still have the noise issue then I will pull the fuse and see if that works ......will removing the fuse cause any other negative effect to the car in anyway ???

Thank you KK

On my 20 inch wheels Fronts are 275 x 40 x 20 Rears 315 x 35 x 20 ? I have read here about different sizes causing issues with the transfer box.
I also know from experience that Subaru are sensitive to this. Just a thought.

I've checked the oem sizes that BMW quote for 20" alloys and they are exactly as you have them on yours.

I have 315 x 35 x20 rear but 275 X 45 x 20 on the front which should be 40 and apparently are winter tyres so maybe I should just get the advised tyre size on the front. I feel the 45 on the front will be causing an issue as it seems the noise came around the same time as the front tyre change.

Thanks Greydog

The wheel & tyre sizes should be staggered but the rolling diameter is the key bit.  That /45 set is definitely wrong and will cause problems.  A new set on one axle and a worn set on the other can upset the system and in rare cases destroy a diff - even more so if the wrong size is fitted. Others on here have reported odd issues with non-OEM tyres (BMW ones have a '*' on the side wall) from their 'approved' brands.

I can't see what pulling the transfer box fuse will do either?  The fuse box is likely to be the one above the glove box roof.  It can't be a good idea unless for a VERY short time.  Disconnecting the xDrive could cause other issues.

Winter tyres are fine up to 20C but then the wear can get excessive.  Some folks run them all year with no issues.

Get the right size fitted and the issue should go away.  The right sizes are on the pressures plate on the drivers door 'B' pillar.  There really is no excuse for anyone to put the wrong size on.

I hear what you say Richard and the tyres are the logical first step and hoping that resolves the issue. Unfortunately there aren't any stickers on any of my door jambes or pillars.

I will be a very happy man if the tyres resolve the issue and I will have to put the TC repair down to experience but I'm not upset that I've had it done. Thaknk again to all

Interesting.......there should be a black & silver sticker visible with the door open which has all the different tyre sizes, weight loading and pressures.

Ok. Pulling the fuse will confirm the noise is coming from transfer box and You will have Your answer. You will not do any harm. All power will go to the rear tyres.Pull it out, drive it. Put it back on. Easy way to check. I'm working on transfer boxes, repairing them. I know what i'm talking about....In your case, as i mention in my 1st post, noise is from ATC, probably caused by wrong tyres...

Is there any way to force it to the front pair to eliminate a rear diff for example?

Rears are driven by a shaft directly connected with gearbox...

Well via the xDrive unit at least with the rear clutch engaged otherwise you can't shift to all FWD or all RWD which the xDrive unit can do.  So if it can be forced to one by pulling the fuse then can it be forced to the other some way?

No..it does not work like that. Clutch pack is only for the front drive. rears are always driven. it can be 100% to the rear with 0% to the front but it cant be the other way round. rear are always driven. rear is driven by a internal shaft, front by clutch pack+chain. By stoping the rears you stop the whole car.You can shift all to the front only by taking rear shaft off. Can not be done by any fuse.
