I rebuilt mine a few years ago, the thread is still on here somewhere. It cost a lot more than 2 grand. I trusted a garage to do the initial repair after the guides broke, but they did not clean the engine out properly which resulted in a blocked oil pump suction strainer and a knocking bottom end.
You can repair the guides without taking the engine out as most of the front end lifts away. If you do this then you MUST remove the sump pan and clean/replace the pump strainer. I you do this then I would fill the engine with cheap oil, run for 20 minutes or so then drain and clean again. Its a lot cheaper than a metalsprayed crank and a full rebuild. (But I am not promising that the bits still left in the engine from the guides will not move around and cause damage. Your call.)
To get the engine out you will need the front end lifting quite high, and engine and box are heavy so be careful with lifting gear.
Mine has done over 30k with its rebuilt engine. Goes like a rocket as well. I changed everything while I was in there, 2 rods, all bearings rings seals, new oil pump etc. Its not cheap

i would try and find someone to re build your engine, a second hand unit is a gamble, at least if you re build your own you know its right, also i may be wrong but despite yours been a nice colour combo i think 3-4k isnt going to happen for a car that needs 2k+ worth of engine work, theres 4.6is running and driving at 4.5k+

If the X5 doesn't sell my priority will be to try and find out a bmw v8 specialist. Maybe even Morgan as thery use use the v8 engine
In regards to value i have set it at that as any less would be such a loss i would rather spend the money to repair the X5. I understand you can get a runner for say 5k or i believe one in this spec and condition for 6k+ but at least it gives you 2k+ to start an engine rebuild. At 6k you could have the same happen to me after 2 weeks of ownership and still be faced with a huge bill.
What a dilemma !!!!!!!
If anyone has any recommendations for an engine builder please let me know

but what im saying is if its a 6k car, who would pay 4k, as the bill could run well over 2k and who buys a new car as a non runner, where as at 2k someone would chance it so they have a chance to grab a bargain

Re: 4.6is engine failure!!! Any one know of an engine for sale or a rebuilder?
In my eyes you would have to allow for a full engine rebuild, you just don't know what you're going to uncover when you start ripping it apart, then once you're in there you might as well do certain jobs anyway, it wouldn't make sense not to, ( unless of course you're just going to do enough to flog it on to some poor unsuspecting victim).
Then, once the engine is out, what about the gearbox, we all know about these, would it not make sense to sort it before it does eventually go?
You either end up with one sorted x5, ( but it's cost you an arm and a leg ), or, you bodge just enough to recover some money, ( but if you're going to do that you might as well get rid now and cut your losses ).
As you say, what a dilemna.
