Had mine for about 6 months now and had a few issues.  Brake pipes pulleys etc etc  but each time the bill was really reasonable.  No more expensive than any othe car i have owned.  Get yourself a good independent.  Mine drives bmws and his wife has a 4.4  so he is great at finding the issue and resolving quickly.  This saves a fortune.

definitely recommend buying one that has been looked after.  I was lucky  the previous did everything on the cheap  but he had only owned it for 18 months.  Previously  my car had been worshipped  so a few hundred plus a major service  and I have a great car.  Can see they would easily  start to rack up problems  if good oil servicing  delays in repair etc.

I love mine but it might have to go.  I need something that will pull a horsebox.  But having fixed all the silly bits I am loathed to sell it.  The V8  The drive  love it.  Mines only done 88k  so not high mileage.

Having owned and sold mine just recently i concur with comments above...

The only additional weak link on these vehicles is the front differential. I had the luxury to replace mine and it did cost me just over a grand from the main dealer while labour was free (by an indp. Garage). 4.8is and 3.0d facelift models share the same part and it is extremely challenging to source one 2nd hand..

Hope that helps

I have owned mine for 5 years now and although I still love driving it, it certainly has had its problems, thankfully covered under the BMW extended warranty for most of the expense.  History is really important as several have pointed out - as they age, successive owners may not have had the money or inclination to keep up with the attention these cars sometimes need.  I have no intention to change vehicle in the near future - Bought at 27000 miles it is just about to turn the clock to 100000.  Lots of expensive bits replaced under warranty - alternator, satnav unit, Bt unit, oil cooler, self levelling suspension sensors and compressor and ECU , pano roof, parking sensors...........sounds horrendous and would have been very expensive to sort without warranty, but it has never actually let me down - the engine is a beast.    Am still glad to own and drive it! Happy hunting!
