I think all X5's and X3's have the retractable rear load cover/ parcel shelf, they also unclip easily so you can have the seats down, essentially a larger estate car.
I would go for the F25 X3 if your budget allows. I have the E83 X3. 3.0d . The E83 has dated tech similar to the E53 X5 , the F25 has a more modern look, and as mentioned its the same size internally as the E53 X5 and has the CIC IDrive system.
I've previously had the E53 X5 and find the E83 X3 more eager and feels more powerful as it's the same engine, but is pulling quite a bit less weight around.
When you say your worried about faults, my advice is make sure it's got star marked evenly worn tyres front and back.
I've fitted 255/40/19's on both axles and done away with the staggered set up, the rims were only 1/2" thinner on the front so was within spec to fit the same width/ make as the rears, so I know my rolling circumference is the same all round
When I picked it up it was lurching and you could feel the slip when traveling slowly in the wet.
Now it fine, and is a great comfortable ride .
