When my alternator packed up it was the front alternator bearing seized solid, knackered the belt as well, the screaming sound , was the belt going over the seized alternator pulley.
Has the alternator seized up (although it is a ''new one'') ?
I ended up with 2 new belts, alternator, 2 pulleys.

just been out now , all belts are ok , alternator pulley is definatly spinning, and there is a definite whine coming from it
on the last part of our journey home, it was lets say spirited, could I have killed it by over revving? no cant do , surly !

It's possible that the new alternator was defective, we get motors at work as well as other electro mechanical items going down early life.
There isn't much you can do to wreck an alternator , parts these days are assembled and sent out, maybe the odd 1/100 may be batch tested.
I would contact the seller for a warranty claim.

Yes, Horizon may well be right.
Unfortunately it has to come off the car to check.
Did a garage fit it/ did you fit it/ or a supply sand fit ??
Anyway it sounds as if the alternator is u/s.
So take the car to whoever supplied the alternator and ask their opinion.

I fitted it yesterday, not a hard job tbh, hardest bit was removing the fan
and then breaking the little black pipe that goes round the expansion tank
got some nice garden hose in its place now, looks bad ass
there is definite a alternator whine now, you can hear it quite clearly

Well, I would just like to update everyone on this ...
fitted a RTX alternator from carparts4less , or eurocarparts, (same company) everything went nice ,
the new alternator lasted about 15 miles before it was killed ,
I found a place in Batley , up here in sunny Yorkshire, eBay link below
took my old bosch alternator and gave me back a bosch parts recon , I think uprated bearings though.
price was 130 quid
1 year warranty,
the car is perfect now ( well as perfect as a 155k miles 16 year old car can be

so Steve's advice of the day is
DONT BUY A RTX alternator
